Vehicle Mounted Rain Awning

My wife and I want to make our '97 disco function a bit better for camping with the kids. Last year, we spent time huddled under our pop up rain shelter and started talking about having an attached awning for this kind of scenario. I shopped a bit and really like the idea of the Rhino Rack Foxwing. There's also a smaller version, but we've got 4 kids, so the extra space would be needed.

Besides the price, my only hesitation is that your vehicle is essentially tied down. If you want to jump in and go, as we often do, you're forced to tear down first.

I'm thinking of modifying a free standing shelter or car port, but am curious if any others have ideas or thoughts.

Look at the EZ-Awn Bat 270. It's completely self-contained, including the telescoping support legs. Everything folds back into the bag mounted on your rack. I put one on my truck a couple of years ago and it's perfect for our typically brief stops. Quick, simple, well made, but not cheap. Comes in versions for both right and left sides of the vehicle. There is even a bigger version for those who want more cover. When we just need shade, I swing out the awning and don't even deploy the legs.
