Verizon to get iPhone January 2011

Apple has several reasons to add Verizon as a carrier.

First, half of Verizon subscribers say they would buy an iPhone if it were available. That's many millions of new sales for Apple.

Second, Apple can't continue to count on AT&T alone to win the war for mindshare in the smart phone market. Android phones are a big sales success on Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, the carriers where the iPhone is not available. Microsoft's new Windows 7 Phone operating system will appear on smartphones later this year.

Third, Verizon has recently concluded testing its 4G technology called LTE ("long term evolution"). I'm guessing that Verizon will start making LTE available in test markets shortly, and they need a smart phone to take advantage of the higher speeds. Call it the "iPhone 4G."

Fourth, the contract giving AT&T exclusive access has to end sometime!

Engadget claims to have seen internal Verizon documents that say
the company will make its 4G data service (aka LTE) available in
30 USA cities in 2010. The company plans to provide subscribers with
7-12Mbps download speed and 3-5Mbps upload. Compare that with
1Mbps down and 400Mbps up with Verizon's 3G (EVDO) today.

The fast 4G service would be a good match with Apple's FaceTime video chat
application. FaceTime is available today only on the iPhone 4, but there's
talk that new versions of the iPad and iPod Touch will be released with cameras
that face the user. And FaceTime could easily be adapted to work with
Apple iMacs and laptops that have a built in camera.

After all the problems Apple has with the new iPhone I have to wonder why anyone would care if they are available on Verizon or not when there are so many other great phones on the market.

But there is no other phone with as many good apps

Unfortunatly thats how people believe, they are blinded by the merketing. The iphone doen't have any more features/apps than my old windows mobile phone had.
You would be surprised at how many people are now asking hw my droid works without a case on it since it has the same antenna probems are the iphone according to Jobs. He says all phones have that problem so all his followers believe him, he says they have more/better apps so all his followers believe it. They won't beleive that there are other/better phones out there.

Its interesting to look at the iphone on other carriers besides AS&S, around the world people report dropped calls and other reception problems with the iphone which seems to say that the problems are not all carrier related. Also other people with better quality phones (Blackberry for example) don't report the same recpetion problems the iphone users do. Of course I can't remember ever having a dropped call which seems to be acceptable and normal for iphone users, I've been with Verizon for years and don't think I've ever had a dropped call.

Droid user with Verizon, never had a dropped call with this phone since getting it in November.
And...hundreds of apps available for it for free.

If you look at the rate that apps for Android is catching up to iPhone, the fact that there are less right now does not concern me in the slightest.

Notice I didn't say anything about useability, I just said there are/were as many features/apps for WM. Useability WM sucks, thats why I have a droid now, my old phone is still kicking, I'm letting my son use it now as an mp3 player. Its been thrown across the room more than once during a tantrum (and given back to at a later date for equally good behavior). It was the useability that made me replace it, I couldn't be driving down the road and want to play some music and have to go into media player then library then change to the sd card then scan for music then add to library and then look through to find what I want, etc. Mine us unfortinatly one of the ones that not supported by the xdadevelopers ports of android so its stuck crappy WM on it.

The Droid X sure is a big phone. I doubt many women will buy it. It seems sized for a guy's pant pocket.

I would rather have better data plans than all the features of the high-end phones. The 2gb max data plan from most of the wireless carriers is very small. The data roaming rate for taking the phone outside the U.S. is brutal. Are there sim data cards that work throughout western europe?

It's odd people bash the iphone, yet buy a knockoff. I might buy an android phone, but I still recognize that apple made the category and is by far the design leader.

From what I heard it wont be till 2013. Thats when apples contract with ATT runs out.

My understanding is that making the ipad 3g on ATT exclusively allowed Apple to sell the iphone on another domestic carrier. I don't think though that it's a done deal for VzW though, especially with the success of the Droid phones and the new iphone's issues. Depending on the success of the Droid X and some other phones in the pipeline, Vz may not feel it needs the iphone.

LTE starts rolling out in 4Q10 IIRC.

Apple didn't make the category, they brought it to end users, the smartphone category existed for years but was mostly used by busiess users and tech geeks.

Android isn;t a knock off of the iphone any more than the iphone is knock off of the palm IIIc. Lots of us buy them for the pim capability since non smartphones are loosing the pim functionality now we have to get a smart phone.

What 2G plan are you referring to, most carriers its unlimited.
