Video, external HD, iCloud, what's the best way on a long trip?

I'm 67 and my technical knowledge/learning ability is starting to slip. I have a GoPro and a new Garmin virb (have not used the Garmin) that I'll use to document my upcoming 4 month long trip. I'll have my iPad and iPhone along also. I'm using 64 gig sa cards that will hold around 4-5 hours of vid. What I need is a convenient way to store my videos. I'm thinking an external hard drive but iCloud might work also. What ever I use must be easy.

First the hard drive. Is there one avalible that will take sd cards directly? My iPad is very limited and I don't think I could load a vid than transfer it to an external hard drive.

What about iCloud? Could I buy space and transfer my stuff to it? How much would I need?

I'll be on my motorcycle so space is limited. Thanks

I have fairly limited experience with cloud storage. But I do use it to keep all of my photos backed up. What I have noticed though is even with a fairly good Internet connection at home it takes a long time to upload video. That could be pretty time consuming on a trip. But the biggest plus I see with the cloud is that you can't lose it.

Hard drives are very cheap now. You can get 1tb hard drives for 40 to 50 dollars. Which should hold more than enough video for your trip. And they are pretty small now too. I haven't seen one that would load strait from a card though. But it would be easy enough to load it from your tablet. Biggest downside I would see to a hard drive is that it can be damaged or lost.

Thanks DC. I don't know if my iPad is capable of holding a 4 hour vid. If there was some way to plug in a SD card into an external hard drive I'd go for it. Still looking.

First 2 links are searches on and info about back up

3rd link is what you need to get all your gopro video but for 4 months of video my guess you would need quite a few of these or a crap ton of sdhc cards for the gopro

my suggestion is not to shoot in full 1080 video - shoot in 720 or lower for times when it not necessary and that will get you a lot more video per gig on the card - but if you want to do everything at 1080 then just remember that you will have very large files and even 64 gigs of video it will take some time to transfer to any media ( storage -- computer back up drive and the cloud )
dont forget the batteries for the gopro - sure you can get 4 hours on the 64 gig card but the battery only last for 2 hours if that and if you plan to use the wifi setting and the bluetooth to use the remote or your phone to control the start stop of the video or take pics or change setting on the fly ( the wifi and bt must be on all the time to do that ) your battery life will go to about 1.5 hrs
what go pro camera do you have 3 / 3+ / 4 silver or black

lest figure out what you will need for storage if you shoot for about 25 days a month x 4 months = 100 days of shooting x that by 4 hours a day ( rough max of storage on a 64 gig card ) thats 400 hours of video devide that by 4 hours per card tells you that you will need 100, 64 gig cards thats almost 7 terabytes of video ( thats a lot ) and at 60 bucks for a good card like delkin brand at 60 bucks a card thats $6,000.00 for just cards alone !!!

you could buy a few cards ( back ups help ) and buy 4 of the hyper drives linked above and get the 2tb versions at $450.00 each and save you over $4000.00 bucks that would give you the storage for your 4month adventure

I hope this helps and I hope my math is somewhat correct its already been a long day !!

if you need more help send me an email I do this day in and day out for customers in the video world

Thanks Chad, I was looking hard at that Hyper drive, the fact that you can also view and edit your vids is a real plus. It's on sale for $225 now, just $50 more than the Passport. I'm still trying desperately to make a good decision.
