Hi Guys,
Anyone looking for an inexpensive 4x4 platform to build an expedition vehicle?
Here is my good bang for your bucks candidate.http://www.craiglook.com/all.html?q=kaiser+m725
The Kaiser jeep m725 ambulance is a deal at $2500, Just find a 1st gen. Dodge Cummins
pick up donor for another $1500-$4500 and swap everything useful. My m725
build is still in the part gathering phase but so far i've picked up a set of chevy
4x4 dually 4.56 axles, H1 hummer wheels with 37" goodyear radials (cheap from http://www.trailworthyfab.com.
After the axle swap and power steering/hydroboost disc upgrade I'll drive it round while I shop for a
good Cummins diesel and overdrive tranny. yeah it's a lot of work but you will have a unique and very capable 4x4 camper when you are done.
Another good thing about a vintage vehicle is it is smog exempt and you can build it as high tech or low tech as you want it. Cheers

Charles, what's your floor plan look like?
Are you planning on doing a pop up roof?

I guess the jury's out on this as an expedition rig but I'm on board.

m725 ideas

Sojourner,
I'm still planning on some kind of pop top. I really like the flip-pac. As for the interior I was thinking of a 72 "jack knife sofa bed on the passenger side and
the kitchen and storage on the drivers side (like the pics I posted on Ambu-build thread). However the lenthwise side seating is fine for two adults that ride up front then sit in the back only when stopped. I have two kids that will be riding in the rear and lately I'm thinking sitting sideways for a few hours at a time might not be too comfortable, especially off-road. So latey i've been thinking a westfalia style interior might be more comfy for the little ones.
