Vintage Van Life

I ran across this slide as I was cleaning out my mom's home and thought you guys might appreciate it. This was take in 1966 on a family camping trip to the Olympic National Park in Washington. The night before we were deluged in a rainstorm and everyone in the tent woke up floating on their air mattresses. Lucky for me, I am the youngest and was small enough to sleep high and dry on one of the bench seats of the van. The photo captured all the gear hung up to dry out in the morning. Of course it was mostly cotton so it never dried out.

My dad bought that van new in 1964 and we travelled all over the Pacific NW in it. We went skiiing on Mount Hood just about every weekend in the winter and the van chugged up the hill at 25 mph but we never had to stop and chain up in the snow so we still got to the slopes about the same time as everyone else. This is the only vehicle from my youth that I wish I still had but only because it brings back a lot of happy memories. I would much rather be camping, er, I mean "overlanding" in my Fuso. The Fuso isn't much faster up the hills but it does have heat.

Thanks for sharing, your memory caused me to remember something of the sort from childhood.

I've had a cool sticker for the longest time, it's classic VW van camper with a forest backdrop. Think I'll go ahead and slap that sticker on my van today in tribute.
