Given that I now own one of these myself, I can tell you that 56K is entirely reasonable. If I had that kind of money I would have bought this (which was for sale when I was looking) rather than my ride. That is a very good example (low miles, well restored) with
almost all the extra goodies. If you look close at the dash console you'll see 2 knobs in the center: those are lockers. All it's missing is the third (which runs <$1000) front locker. Get all 3 and the only place you'll ever take a
built Tacoma where this can't go is a trail that requires a high degree of articulation. You were right that this is more comparable to an SMB, with less comforts but way better offroad. Also that engine makes 2.5x the original ponies.
I really wish someone would build something like this again for a reasonable cost. VW/Audi, Subaru, and Jeep could all build relatively inexpensive rear engined, 4WD, FC platforms with minimal modification to their existing drivetrains. Okay rant over.
