Want to build a rear bumper for 03' DC Tacoma.

As the title says I am looking to build a rear bumper for my tacoma. Would like to see some other builds with some input on their bumper. Not looking to get crazy and add s ton of weight to the *** off my truck. My only requirements are a spare rack swing. I am not really into the round tube look, I've got an ARB up front. This is the one I built for my '03. It's changed a little bit over the years but it's been great.
.
It started out like this. Just a simple bumper with a receiver. and some side protection.

.
Then added a single swingout

.

.
Added mounting for my hilift

.
Built a second swingout for fuel/water.

.
Removed the basket for fuel/water and added a bracket for CO2

.
Didn't like the CO2 that exposed and moved the tank into the bed. This is the current and probably final configuration with a small ammo can on the second swingout to hold recovery gear.

CBI made my rear bumper.
But be advised, make sure to add the frame re-enforcement plates.
Your frame will thank you for it. :)

I think Box Rocket's bumper is one of the best looking swing outs for a pickup I've ever seen.

I agree, I've been relentlessly searching for my bumper plan and that is what I keep going back to. Simple yet stout. It's got just what is needed and not over the top. Thanks for the quick posts, now it's time to buy some steel. What gauge steel is that? Looks like 1/4 wall.

The main bumper section on mine is 1/8" wall 3x5 tube. The swingout is built from 2" sq tube and is also 1/8" wall. Keeps the weight down and has still been very strong. I've been hard on it and it shows no signs of abuse. The hinge is were you shouldn't skimp. The plates for the dual shear hinge is 1/4" and the sleeve is heavy wall (I bought it from Comp 4x4 and they don't even list the thickness but it's gotta be 1/2" thick or better.)

This one started as an all pro with the fill plates. I would have rather had a plate bumper, but this was much cheaper to get to my door, and I had the matching sliders, so I went with it.
the swing arm was added later and was from a Land Rover. I just had my friend and shop owner, fab it to the bumper.

After 2 years, I can tell you what I like and don't like:

There is some sag, especially when loaded up. I'm not sure if its in danger of breaking off, and it doesn't feel like it, but it's noticeable with bikes on the back especially.

Two swing arms are better than one in my opinion, for the above reason.

Build it for what you do the most. Do you go far away and need extra fuel? add the basket. Do you use propane often? a propane carrier. Carry bikes, etc..

I'm going to redo this one. My thought is to add two receiver hitches to the current setup to support a rear cargo carrier and put the tire under the truck.

Do you have pictures of the hinge mount that is connected to the bumper? I have the same bumper and want to add a swing out for my spare. Having difficulty figuring out how I would mount the hinge thing and gusset it right.

I have a bumper I'm trying to sell that could work as a great starting point. Then you could add-on to suit your needs. This bumper would bolt right up to your frame. Depending on shipping costs, I'm in Colorado, it might be worth the $?

thanks for the heads up on the bumper sale. My dad is planning on driving out to see his grand daughter and would probably be interested in a detour. Not sure how he would fit it in his Trek Disco but may be able to tie it down on the top. How much are you asking for it?

I live in Eagle, which is about 30 miles west of Vail. We are right off of I-70. Where is your dad headed? We could meet up somewhere if that helps? I was originally thinking $200 when I posted it in the sale section, since it has some cool features and it comes with a good amount of steel. I would consider any fair offer at this point though....

I'll have to talk to my dad and see what his planned route is, he will be driving from Chicago to truckee. It is hard to tell the mounting situation on the bumper and what is behind what looks to be where the license plate would be? My suspension has recently crapped out on me so that will take priority now so if you can sell it before I can pull the trigger great. OME suspension is eleven years old and is done. I do like the bumper though.

Here's mine, not very simple but it is all plate and would go good with the arb front. The light and bed guards are not part of the bumper, they bolt on.

I was a big fan of the CBI on my 04. When I sold the truck, I actually kept the carrier portion as it offered no value to the dealer. I've contemplated keeping it for my 2nd gen, but it's in the for sale section currently.

That's a very nice bed rack too.. Is it featured in a thread anywhere else?
