I'll be in need of a head pretty soon. It's tickin' pretty hard at the moment.

that noise could be good, because on a properly running 22re, there is a .008/.012"(engine hot) gap for valve adjustment... that gap allows the valve to cool, as it briefly rests against the head, but it's rather annoying.

what you should do for now is to check that gap, check the compression, and monitor the oil consumption.

in the meantime, i'd be looking to mount that rebuilt head you just got to a rebuilt short block... use a factory toyota head gasket.

Rebuilt head

All the gaps were good, and it doesn't use any oil. So I just swapped the head over and she's running like a top. Little tick, which is perfect. On the old, the tappets had impacted the valves and had some pretty large dents. Two of the tappet screws had broken off. Now that my engine is running well, the old automatic is starting to have issues, so it looks like I'll be doing the swap sooner rather than later!
