Cleaned all solenoids and rewired tonight. Confimred all had a good ground and there was 12v at the solenoids. Motor is still slow amd grinding and sometimes gets even slower... def think its the motor

I had BP Rebuilders in Kennesaw rebuild my alternator. Overall, pretty meh about them. Charged me $125. Next time around I will be converting from my random old british alternator to a readily available AC Delco 12si alternator. Cheaper and in the future I can have it replaced in a day instead of 2 weeks.

I suspect their cost to rebuild an electrical motor is north of $100.

Have you opened up the motor yet? There really isn't much to it. Check to see if the brushes at the top are ok. Clean the copper inside of it as well. I'd do that before dropping cash on a new motor.

If I was going to buy a new motor, I'd either call warn directly, call Clemson 4x4 (local Warn distributor, they got all kinda good stuff), *possibly* 4 Wheel Parts America, and lastly ebay/Amazon for a new motor.

Don't hesitate to call our customer service team at 800-543-9276 (Monday-Friday, 7am-4pm PST). They should be able to help you troubleshoot the issue.

I may had to do so. I sent a contact for on your website. Trying to find out how old the winch is. Serial # starts in the lower 2's

I have opened it up. It was nasty looking with black dust covering damn near everything. I wiped down everything and blew out the housing with the compressor. I put it all back together and got the same results. I am starting to look at DBelectrics as a replacement. Seems to be a popular option for the 8274 (next popular is a warn 9.5 XP motor). The DB motor comes with a keyed shaft so I wont need a new pinion gear and at $86 its very appealing.

So notes up to this point:

-Winch worked fine powering out/in
-Suddenly started grinding and moving slow but would occasionally go back to normal
-Top case pulled, all gears are fine, brake is fine, no binding and has fresh looking oil
-Motor pulled from housing. Everything was dirty, everything was cleaned
-Reassembled, no binding. Same results, slow with a grind but no more going back to normal speeds
-Hooked buggy up to 7.3L truck to make sure it was not charging system, same results
-Removed solenoids, cleaned, reinstalled and rewired
-Cleaned all electrical connections from winch to battery
-Verified 12v at battery and at winch
-Verified winch and solenoids all have good ground
-Winch now goes slow and grinds, and gets even slower sometimes

Can the motor be removed from the winch and tested on the bench just to see if it is
binding up? Does the motor have bearings that could be bad?

Best regards,

Mike

A single data point, but I bought and installed a DB Electric motor in mine before my 9.5 XP motor. Short story, it lasted about 6 months. Started working intermittently, then not at all. The armature was trashed; I only used it maybe half a dozen times in the 6 months. Maybe I just got the one bad one, but the DB Electric motors are Chinese-made, hence the lower price. I'll post some photos of my 6-month-old DB armature tomorrow (have to do some work right now).

When I replaced mine (burned up the original 1974/5 motor in the mid 80's winching 4 vehicles up a hill at once :Wow1:) I replaced it with one I got from a local motor supplier. $165 IIRC. It's been fine ever since. I'll see if there is any identifying information this weekend.

I ended up ordering a DB motor lastnight. Hopefully I dont catch a bad 1. Usually I am all about quality over price so hopefully this one time doesnt bite me. I also ordered a contactor/solenoid that is 1 single unit vs 4 solenoids. I never have seen one until a few of the guys in a club I am part of posted about them on their 8274 winches. I will update when it is all in and on.

I did this too, and it's a worthwhile upgrade for sure. the cables are a tight fit under the controller cover. I think it looks cleaner to have it under the cover, but if you don't want to put there then you can put it on the end of the motor or under the hood.

Just about looks like my current motor! Lets hope I have better luck than you did. The one thing that hit the brakes on the XP motor (besides price) is warn suggest not using it on the 8274.

Thats exactly what I ordered. I hope to move it under hood or at least behind the winch. One of the guys in the club got longer motor studs and mounted it to the end of the motor

Must be a CYA liability thing for them, because it works perfectly and makes the 8274 a lot more than an 8000 lb. winch. Lots of people have done this mod, and I've never heard any complain about it. It is a little longer than the stock motor.

Another photo that shows the end of my 9.5XP motor peeking out from behind the control box:

Alright. Got the new motor from DBelectrics yesterday. Only hard part of a motor swap is the bearing! Winch is back running super fast. Ready to see if I can find a use for it this weekend! Thanks for all the help/advice

Thanks for that hint,

I'll have to get me a new motor, got a 8274 for free, but the motor is burned, there was no bearing between rotor an pinion gear, :Wow1: so, while be on power, the rotor touched the stator (or so) and everything went up in smoke...
The owner didn't know that, he let the winch being serviced, replacing the motor, but definitely from the wrong person.

I have an old winch with a new but burned motor.

Still cheaper than a whole winch :D

Anyway, I already went to get the right bearing (40/17/12mm) for a ridiculous 5$, did all the wiring new, and gonna order a new motor asap.
If you say the 9.5xp is the best way, I'll order that one, it's only 20 bucks more (plus 17$ for the pinion gear), than the 7536 motor.

"Best" is somewhat subjective, but all I can say is that years and many 4WD trips later, I'm still very happy with mine. Good luck with your installation, though it's dead easy.
