Warn 9000XD spooling issue

Hey guys,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me out here. I have virtually no experience with winches and this has me scratching my head.
Under load and no load while spooling the winch in it seems like the motor runs out of juice temporarily. It will spool at full speed and sound great for a few seconds, then slow right down and sound like it is only running on half power. It does this randomly and continuously every 10-20 seconds.
Does it just need a rebuild?

Side question. Are they typically this "mechanically" loud with grinding noises etc? It seems like they would be but I just want to make sure.

Try a different remote and see if the problems persist. The new WARN remotes are infamously problematic.

Yes. XD9000s are loud and have a certain pulsating mechanical sound to them. Probably normal.

If it were the remote wouldnt it just cut in and out completely? It still pulls just much slower.
I will have to get my hands on another remote and give it a go.

I've never had that particular problem with mine, but I have had remote troubles before which included intermittent working / not working, then only working in one direction.

Have you contacted WARN support? They have been pretty good in my past experience and are generally good at identifying issues.

Definately a good place to start. Much better than having to yank the winch out haha.

I will give them a call here, thanks.

It's no the control - all that does is switch a solenoid pack or a set of cans

Three possibilities

Power supply - check the perm live and switched lives as well as the earth, check battery and any and all connectors. Make sure earth is back to the battery not the chassis

Brake - it's in the drum. Run the winch with no line/cable until it slows then do a heat test carefully on the drum when it is NOT running. If it is hot then strip out the brake cones, clean and re-build or replace (springs as well)

Gear box - could be the grease - most likely too much and a poor quality. You need vey little grease and it needs to be good stuuf. Could eb the mesh of the gear or the sun gear running out of true. It's like lego so strip it down on a clean white surface, make sure you lay out the parts in a line as they come apart. CLean each one thoroughly and carefully, then re-grease with a paint brush. Put a mm or so of grease on all the wear surfaces. Lithium grease is good

I had a problem similar to this when the brake got so full of mud and gunk that it felt like it was under a heavy load every so often

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Pulled my hair out with it. I checked every part of the controller for continuity, checked out fine. Moved on to the solenoids and those were fine. Turns out the 3 POS (read position or Piece of sh.....) switch was just making enough to read on my meter but not enough to energize the solenoid pack.
Oh, and yes, XD9000's sound like a gearbox of marbles, even when new. Good unit though. The changing speed issue sounds like a battery/recharge issue, just a guess though.

Should've bought a Smittybilt!

Sorry, just had to say it. :victory:

Ha, touche'! There's some truth to that I guess. Instead of spending the $9 on a new switch for my Warn I could have just tossed the S(h)ittybilt in the trash and bought another. Don't they come with quick release fasteners for easy disposal?

Talked to a lady at Warn and she said it sounds like the motor is going and sent me a test procedure for it. I will try and get to it this weekend. I hope that isnt the case :S
