Warn M8000-S vs Zeon 8-S Weight

I am thinking of a multi-mount setup for versatility. In comparing the Warn M8000-S to the Zeon 8-S on the Warn website, I was surprised to see the M8000 listed as weighing 55 pounds while the Zeon tips the scales at 75 pounds. I can't see lugging an extra 20 lbs around in the mud but I also wonder if the weights are wrong. Any ideas?

Also, a Zeon 8-S and multi-mount cradle purchased separately seem to cost a lot less than the Zeon 8-S multi-mount kit. Just to be sure I am comparing apples to apples, does the standard Warn cradle fit the Zeon or does the Zeon require a cradle not yet listed on the Warn website?

Finally, also from the Warn website, the Zeon appears to pull over 1000 lbs less than the M8000 with 4 layers on the drum although the line speed is faster. Again, is this info correct? I want the Zeon because it is supposed to be better but I also want the winch that best suits my needs and offers the most bang for the buck.

Thank You,

Maybe (hopefully) the extra weight reflects heavier-duty components or more protection? I don't know, but my Warn 8274 (also an 8,000 lb rated winch) weighs 110 lbs., and I gladly carry that extra weight around, just to have such a great winch when I need it.

Again I don't know for sure, but that sounds like it has to be a different drum diameter. A larger diameter drum will give you less pulling power but faster line speed, and vice-versa.

Just looked up drum diameter and that's it. Zeon is 3.15" vs M8000 at 2.625". If the weight numbers are accurate as the pull ratings now appear to be, then it comes down to my choice of price, weight, line speed and pulling power. Right now it really appears the M8000 is a much better buy for my needs but I will see if someone knows about the weight. In fact, I'm not sure what the Zeon does have except a cool name and look. Thanx.

I read this on IH8MUD a while back...

With regards to weight, as far as I know, the weights are accurate. ZEON is a bit bigger, but its construction is 100% different than the M8000. It's motor end, for example, has an aluminum housing, which adds weight, as do the sturdy tie plates. Both of those items also aid in heat dissipation.

With regards to pricing, that's an interesting thing. I just talked to a member of our Customer Service team about that, and he confirmed that indeed seems to be the case. I am not sure why that is, but we'll be looking into it.

I see what you're saying with regards to the pull by layer on the fourth layer. As far as I know, it should be correct. Both winches will pull the full rated load of 8,000 lbs., and the ZEON does have faster no load and full load line speeds. If you'd like to discuss the technical bits of layers/pull capacities, I'd suggest calling our Customer Service experts at 800-543-9276, and they'll be able to get into the weeds on this. If I had to guess, I'd say it has something to do with drum diameter since ZEON has a larger drum size.

ZEON is faster than the M8000, and has far superior sealing (IP 68 rated, vs. the M8000 which is not sealed). Additionally, the ZEON is quieter and has a clutch lever that is much easier to use. ZEON also does have have the exposed wires that the M8000 does. There are the looks, however, of course those are subjective.

Both are very good winches. We sell a lot of M8000s, but the ZEON 8 is a heck of a winch.
