Water pump

Looking to replace mine and was interested in opinions. Anyone running the AC delco and how has it been? I know the airtex has leaked within 600 miles from past experience on customers cars. Factory is pretty pricey.

Forgot to mention, 05 LR3 4.4.

Yes, I have the Delco unit in my rig. Replaced the OEM while I had the front end apart since I was 80k and it was super easy with the fan off. Delco unit is really nice in my opinion; 2-peice design impeller inlet with metal impeller, better bearings, and metal gasket. I have a comparison in my build thread of the OEM and Delco units on the table.

For the record, my OEM unit was probably fine, I did it by convenience since the fan hit the radiator only to find out the fan sits on a separate mount unlike most cars. My OEM is now my spare on the shelf.

Link attached. A bit more expensive but a reliable unit compared to all of the research I've done thus far. 6k miles on the Delco and it runs and operates great!

Just to follow up, I too now have the delco unit in my rig. I replaced my factory pump which I believe was original due to a gasket seep. I was losing coolant but very slowly so I decided to replace the thermostat housing and the water pump for peace of mind. I am impressed with the delco unit. Feels more stout compared to the factory pump.

In the past nine years I have only seen two water pumps fail on that motor. I would go with a Genuine because they seem like great quality. It is by far the easiest water pump on any Land Rover I have done (which is probably all of them).

As a LR tech so have I, with all the expense of these vehicles maintenance this is one I am happy to get the cheaper option. Eliminates a potential gasket failure from the two halves. The factory one uses a metal gasket between the engine and pump, the Delco one uses a rubber o ring and a metal gasket.

Not sure how that is better since the factory ones are pretty close to perfect as far as water pumps are concerned. I suppose time will tell.

Better in terms of less chance at failure. One less gasket to leak, metal impeller vs plastic. In my experience with VW/Audi water pumps the plastic impellers were the Achilles heel. Hence the reason multiple aftermarket companies started making metal impeller pumps. I agree the factory pumps do last a long time however where I see failure is with the gasket between the two housing halves and the bearing. I agree time will tell.

Furthermore the factory pump sells between $200 and $300, ac delco is $51 with free shipping.

I don't see how saving $150 is worth the risk with an aftermarket part that could potentially leave you stranded when the Genuine part is about as good as they get.

I replaced mine this past June. I wasn't having any problems but the truck had just turned 300k and I was going on a trip towing my TCTeardop trailer that would leave me 13 hours from home and my friends shop. Just preventive maintenance. The water pump in my P38 went around 320k.

I carry 2 spares. Small enough to keep handy.

Of all the things to carry as spares, you carry two water pumps?

At 300k you are in relatively uncharted territory. Pretty much everything is worn out! I'm assuming with that kind of miles you have owned it for a long time and actually taken care of it?
