I should have posted this a long time ago but just kept forgetting.
July '07 we headed out to West Texas to stay in my Father-in-law's cabin he built in the area north of Terlingua, then trek down to Big Bend where we stayed a couple of nights. It was a really great trip but quite exhausting! I drove my '96 Bronco (one of the few vehicles I really miss), which consumed a ridiculous amount of gasoline for the 15 hour trip (that's 15 hours each way). It was packed to the roof and happily hauled me, my wife, my 5yo son, my 3yo daugher, and my 5yo nephew from one side of Texas to the next. Somehow I kept the major part of my sanity...not that I have much left to lose anyway...
The cabin is very well equipped and despite his age and health, my father in law is still a master craftsman with wood. He purchased several hundred acres out there, about an hours drive up remote dirt roads North of Terlingua. There are miles and miles of these dirt roads across the region, some relatively challenging, and all providing beautiful scenery. It's a fun place to explore.
Big Bend is just awesome. We stayed in one of the hotel-like cabins in the basin. Really nice. Despite being the end of July, it was actually chilly at night. My only regret is not having the time to explore the back road areas of the park. I've seen pictures and it looks like some fun wheeling and beautiful country. Hoping to get back there and actually do some camping/hiking as well.

As usual, wish I had taken more. It's a really special area of Texas.
