What about a Titan?

Hey all, I've been lurking quite some time, but dont post often. I'm finally at the point that I will be getting rid of my little 85 ZX and getting into the expo game. Seeing as I drove (and raced) Nissan 300ZX's for years I figured I would go with a Nissan. So reading threads and getting an idea of what to do I went out to test drive both a X and the Frontier. Both great vehicles, but very very very hard to find in 4x4 around me. Then I tested a Titan, far easier to find in 4x4 and are generally cheaper then the other two around me. So that got me thinking....

Everyone seems to be upgrading bits and pieces to parts off the Titan, but I havent seen anyone use the Titan as a base for an expo rig. I have seen a number of Tundras, so is there something with the Titan specifically that makes it not as suitable for this kind of driving that another option would be vastly better? I know it is far bigger then the others, but the big V8 power with a mpg not far below the smaller vehicles, optional rear locker, ground clearance, and ease of finding a crew cab 4x4 seems to make it an inciting option.

What I'm looking to do is this. My girlfriend is a huge Jeep chick and is big into rock crawling. I've done it and have no desire to actually build a rig for it. I have enjoyed the couple overland expo trips that I took with a couple of friends in college and always wanted to get into it. So I'm looking to build a rig that can be driven on max 1 week trips in the US, work as a DD, and accompany my gf to serve as a support vehicle/tow her jeep home when it breaks on her. Would a Titan be a good base to start on? It seems the parts to do it are out there.

If there aren't any Titan people on here, you could check out either ClubTitan.org, or TitanTalk.com. I am sure that someone on one of those forums must have built their Titan as an expedition vehicle.

Just bought (3 weeks ago) a 4x4 Titan & so far I love it - upgraded from a 2005 Tacoma (which was also a great ride). The only thing I have to gripe about so far is that the LE comes with 20" rims & not much, if any, room for a size or 2 larger tires with out putting on a lift of some sort (Deaver makes coilovers for it). I would also recommend taking the factory mud guards off if offroading is in the future - they just hang too low. Just my $.02

Hope that helps a little.

We had an EXPO cookout gathering of Calgary area people about a month ago and a couple there had a brand new Titan, something like a week old. My understanding is that they've traveled Africa and many parts of the world and were about to spend the winter in Central and South America with the truck. There was some form of camper being manufactured for it but I don't recall what other modifications they had in mind. I guess they got a steal of a deal on it they couldn't refuse. If they're still around and online, hopefully they'll comment here on their experience with the unit so far.

Nissan Titan

yes we do have a 2009 Nissan Titan and it is currently being readied for an extensive overland expedition. We just sold our Land Cruiser with a roof top tent which we drove 80,000km across Africa but wanted a expedition vehicle we could sleep inside. We did extensive research and seriously considered a Tundra but finally choose the Nissan Titan for a number of reasons. We are also having a camper specifically made for the Titan which should be ready early next year. Having driven over 80,000km through 34 countries we had a pretty good idea of what we needed and wanted in an expedition vehicle, and believe the Nissan offers all what we need and want. We will be updating the build on our website hopefully sometime this month. So stay tuned for the Nissan Expedition Vehicle build

I seriously look in to getting a titan before I got my Tundra. I was worried about all the front diff issues that everyone seemed to be having. Also I like the toyota more when I drove it.

I have a titan 4x4 offroad model. It's not my Expo vehicle but I do off raod it and took it as my trip vehicle for my recent Yellowstone trip.

NO complaints about any part of it... like the power and the room.

The only thing I did was, while off road I damaged a factory step rail. Of course if it was purposely setup for off road I'd get real sliders.

I have an 04' Titan that I am currently turning into a DD and expo rig. I have owned it new since early 05' and have NO complaints about it at all. Great truck!!! Tows great and is very roomy with tons of power. The only downside to the Titan is that the aftermarket support isn't as good as other vehicles. I say go for it and you'll have a unique rig that not many other poeple have.

Club Titan is a great resource for the Titan, I highly recommend it.

PRGproducts.com and 4x4parts.com are the two best places to find upgrades for the Titan.

PRGproducts.com is great. Greg is great to deal with. I used to have a Titan. Traded it in because of gas price. Your milleage will reduce GREATLY if you lift + MT tires.

Sounds like the Titan would be perfect for your Expo/Jeep support needs. The only downside I can see is it not being able to fit through some of the smaller trails out there. My old man has one and I drive it all the time. Definitely has the space and power. I'd look for a PRO-4X since it comes with the rear locker, bilstein shocks and skid plates. I'd definitely go with PRG for any suspension mods. Rear diff gears are available for the rear end on the PRO-4X and front diff gears should be available soon to help compensate for larger tires.
