Something I neglected to mention about GaiaGPS which, IMHO, puts it above everything else: the ability to add and customize layers, IF you get a "Green" ($20) subscription. They already have probably more map sources than most, but with this you can say overlay 1900 USGS topos over Google maps, if you're looking for old sites. And you can adjust the opacity of the layers. Or adjust the level of shading added to topos. Or bike maps over aerials. Or whatever. Very nice. Screenshot, with USGS aerial photo and USFS topo.
