What is everyone using for bedding in their RTTs?

Hey everyone! Well our new RTT just arrived and we thought we had the whole bedding situation figured out...we went to the big REI sale last week and picked up a nice new Kelty double sleeping bag. However, we ran into a problem tonight...our RTT has an extra thick pad it came with, which is nice, but between that and the thickness of our new bag the darn thing won't close with the bag in it! Thats something I was really looking forward to with the RTT was being able to store our sleeping gear in there.

Currently our backpacking bags work just fine folded up in there, but I was hoping to escape the mummy bag as its not very comfortable for the way I like to sleep. For now it will do.

This is currently the replacement bag we are looking at http://www.ccoutdoorstore.com/big-agnes-dream-island-15-double-sleeping-bag.html and I was wondering first of all if anyone has any experience with this, and secondly what other people are using for bedding? I know some just use sheets and a comforter which is probably fine here in AZ for the summers, but I sleep REALLY cold, so I'm not sure that would be enough for me.

Any help would be appreciated!

Get some flannel sheets like I have.
Mine are full fitted size.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000PKCCF6/ref=nosim/ihco-20

I went with a twin comforter from The Company Store
http://www.thecompanystore.com/parent/Comforters+Down/3101/CT06X_3/&An=102&A=114
Twin Ultra Warmth model
CT09 twin, 72x92" 35oz.

I liked it so much I bought another one for my home bed.
These are very high quality and warm.

Maybe the comforter will lay flatter than the bag you just got?

I will have pics this weekend with the comforter in place, for now I just have the sheets on in this picture.

Oooh! Which one did you get!?
We just use a flannel sheet over the mattress, two normal pillows and two sleeping bags. It all closes up inside just fine.

Ya I just don't think a comforter is going to be enough for me to sleep comfortable. We are going to look for that Big Agnes bag this weekend and if we can't find something then a flannel sheet and our two sleeping bags will have to do!

Tim, we got the Camping Lab tent, pretty close to yours, same design. :friday:

That's one of the main reasons we chose the Maggiolina. We're able to leave pillows, blankets, reading material, lights, water bottles, etc. in place. Crank the handle and go. Doesn't get much easier.

IMO- Having to move things in and out with each stow/setup kind of defeats the purpose of a RTT.

I used to have the sheets and comforter setup also, but recently swapped out the 3" factory mattress for a 2" Memory foam mattress and a mondo-sized Butler All-season bag.
This is great for cold weather!
During the summer I may go back to the sheets & comforter in mild temps, keeping the sleeping bag handy in case I go somewhere colder.
Either way, it all fits inside the Airland.

What tent do you have that won't fit a double sleeping bag? A double shouldn't take up more room than two regular bags and pillows.

I used a RTT from racktents.com and we fit bedding for 2 adults and one child including pillows in there with no problem. You do have to fold the sleeping bags over before attempting to close the tent so they don't bunch up in the hinge, but that only takes about 10 seconds (literally). Storing bedding in a RTT certainly isn't a feature that is exclusive to the Mag tents.

A slight bit off topic, but worth comment...Memory foam may be a great for home use, fair weather camping, or heated RVs, but from my experience, it is not appropriate for tent camping in cold weather. As the temp approaches freezing, memory foam will firm; below freezing, you'd swear you were sleeping on a sheet of plywood. We had this happen in a friend’s truck two winters ago - worse night's sleep ever. My buddy immediately gave the pad away (which was very expensive, if I recall) and replaced it with something else. It's true that the quality of memory foam pads vary greatly (i.e. you get what you pay for), but from what I have been told, all of them will stiffen up at lower temps. This was current as of a couple years ago, so if anyone knows this to no longer be the case, please sing out.

I think I read that here too in one of the older threads.
Good advice.

I like the mattress that came with the AirLand, seems pretty comfortable.

Au Contraire Mon Frair.....The double sleeping bag we have from Kelty is ginormous...huge...the stuff sack it goes in is the size of a 9 year old child...our backpacking bags? Compress down into nice tiny bags...not as thick, so no the double won't fit in there.....too thick.. our tent also came with at 3 inch thick mattress as your's I believe came with a 2? An inch may not seem like a lot but it is certainly making a difference in this case.

The tent we purchased was the Camping Labs tent...

We use a set of full sheets, a velux blanket, and a queen size 600 fill down comforter and have slept comfortably in the mid 30s and my wife sleeps cold. Heated matress pad for next winter should keep us toasty in colder weather.
For me, part of the point of the RTT is to be able to use sheets rather than a sleeping bag.

Heated Mattress pad -dual control inside the Mattress cover. Flannel Sheets, Inexpensive Walmart down alternative comforter - just in case things get damp.

Thank you Desertdude/girl for the heated mattress pad idea, yes it is quite nice to have a warm bed & the battery isolator means the truck starts the next day. The Full Size fits perfect in a large Maggiolina. Bob
