What is this "rust" of which you speak?

For my 89 Raider 3.0, I've got a couple of rust pictures which, if I remember correctly, anything rusty will send toasty running.

First, there are a pair of circular indentations on both sides of the cab floorboards. Actually, they are circular rust spots that are mostly eaten through. Any ideas of what these are for? I think the PO may not have realized that the windows functioned both down AND up.

My donor 91 Montero LS has the same indentations but sans rust.

Thanks!

Those are "plugs" to let water out if the truck were to be flooded. They are usually sealed with the factory body sealing compound. Every car I have had, they functioned as moisture traps and were rusty.

They actually might be some sort of lifting point for the assembly line. I've always thought they were a removable plug for water.

Sidenote: My 87 Raider has the same exact wear spot right from getting in and out of the truck. HA!

That's my preferred solution. Thoughts on where to get them? I'm going to try Ace and Fastenal.

Toasty

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
Yeah i would eliminate that rust before it turns into something to worry about. I know you get plastic and rubber ones. Try your local automotive paint/body supply store. That wouldn't send me running but i would definitely stop it before it became a problem.

if you are OCD about the rust there are easy options to fix this
remove rusted plugs:

a. molasses-slow very effective

b. Rust mort-very effective but messy

c. muratic acid, very very effective but must neutralize with baking soda water mix, rinse clean and hit with SEH por15 or rust mort.

my fix? two pieces of aluminum semi trailer repair tape. One on the bottom one on the top. Done!

Screw windows. I am going to make my doors optional.

Turns out the little round pocket plate thingies in the donor are perfectly fine. I'll do some rust mitigation and do that. I just saved myself $2. :-D

Next rust spot. This the behind the bumper, below the headlight alongside the frame. I'm sure there's an official term. It's rusted on both sides of the vehicle, but not all the way through. The pass side of the donor has the same problem. Is this common? Anything to worry about?

EP won't let me upload any files:
