What is this?

what is this big piece on the front of the bumper and how is it used? I've only seen this on the Arctic Trucks or similar . . . to keep the front from falling into a crevasse? It doesn't look like it would support much weight + it looks like it's hinged with no support to keep it from flipping up. I usually see it in the "up" position during transport and horizontal when they're driving, but never saw how/why it's used

in the top 2 pics it looks like the extension would stop up against the bumper, when lowered, with the end at about ground level . . .

yup, you got it. crevasse bar.

I've seen video of one of those truck's front ends falling into a crevasse, and having the bar stop it.
