What to do with a 24v cummins

So here's the delima. I have an 89 Suburban that awaits restoration and mods, soon to be ex-wife is costing me a ton of money to divorce her (apparently she thinks she deserves more than 50/50). So i'm driving around checking on the local crackheads and cranksters, when i come across a 2001-2002 Dodge 2500 diesel. I strike up a conversation with the first addict I see and as it turns out, he happens to be the owner of the Dodge. Long story short, he say's he's gonna scrap it and may get about $300 for the whole truck. Now, mind you, the entire engine is there, along with the transmission, but the body is destroyed from a rollover. Me being the generous man that I am, I say "how bout I give you $200 and i'll come have it towed". He replies with "sounds good".. so now I have a 2001-2002 (not sure yet cuz no vin can be seen from the damaged cab) and according to the paperwork has 110xxx miles on it.... so what do I do with such a find? Sell it? Swap it into the burb?

Only problem is it's 2wd so a tranny swap would be in order (auto preferably) and not too much info on swapping a 24v.. any thoughts? Will a 4l80e stand up to a cummins? Gonna run 4.56's in the 1 ton axles i have (already geared).

I would keep her under tarp until a suitable transplant vehicle is obtained. If you want a diesel in your Surb then a 6.2 litre is the only way to go. Its one of the best diesel engine out there and will last 300 to 400 K easy if oil is change every 3K to 5K. The ONLY thing it needs is a Banks Sidewinder turbo kit. Then you have power and better fuel economy. Look for another Dodge with a blown engine. Thats my 2 cents.

depending on your burb, is it a 1500? 2500? 3500? the cummins is way to heavy for a 1500. the engine alone is worth 5g at least. there is high demand for them to so you could probably sell it quick. personally... id put it in the burb, its more reliable than the 6.2, has WAY more power, and has better parts support, it would be a big undertaking though, swapping the chips, computers, and all the sensors over, and like i said if its not a 3500 your looking at a new D60 front axle to. just to carry the 1100lbs of engine that is the 6bt.

The 24v, with all the wiring, wont be too bad to swap in. You can work the dash cluster into the swap, and keep all the gauges working....you already have all you need for the swap....

If swapping a diesel INTO something, I wouldnt swap in a 6.2/6.5... Not saying anything BAD about them, but, scoring a Cummins(already having it!)... reliable, good economy, and POWER.....

Put a D60 under the front, get some mounts, and swap the harness. Getting a trans... talk to a shop, see if they will let you use the 2wd trans as a core...

OR, just poke around on the Cummins Forum, there are plenty of people swapping trannies in and out... can probably snag a 47Re w/ a 241(HD if youre lucky), for a good deal... I would go with a NV4500, or 5600 personally, but, then again, I hate slushboxes.... too much money to make them strong and reliable.

Heck, where are ya, I'll take that engine off your hands... I need to put a 24v BACK into my truck sooner or later for Emissions crap....

i second chasespeeds idea.

i wouldnt worry too much about putting the cummins in the v1500 over the v2500. the frames are the same, you will change the springs and axles anyway. if you are worried about frame strength you can always plate it.

I already have a dana 60 for the front. For a swap though ,there doesnt seem to be much info about swapping the 24 valve's though, which is where my concern is. A 12 valve would be an easy swap since there is no computer junk. The 24v would need all the sensors, etc. to work. The computer is there, but the harness has been cut, probably by the cranksters for the copper wire. I'm just trying fr idea's for now.

The dodge 24 valve cummins trucks used two computers, one on the left front of the engine which ran the engine and one on the right rear of the engine compartment which ran the transmission and other stuff. How much of the harness is cut and MIA? The 24 valve engine is not too bad to swap, don't be afraid of the wiring. You will need a good wiring diagram though. You need to decide on which transmission you are going to use before you worry much about cut wiring. A 4l80e will need a separate controller or a manual valve body conversion. A dodge auto will need some adaptors and stuff to hook it up to your rh drop transfercase. Either way you will have to spend some money to get the transmission in your truck. I am going to be doing a cummins 24 valve conversion here in one of my project rigs this winter. I am using a manual trans though, the engine I got came out of a dodge with a manual trans.

I swapped a 12v in place of the 24....

If you want simple wiring... remove the VP44, and swap in a P7100... doesnt get any simpler than that.....

Then, you'll have the best of both worlds IMHO. I was going to swap a P-pump into my original 24v, until I found the stitched crack in the block.... BUH BYE... Care to guess which number was stamped into the block?

If you go THAT route, you a 47R, and just get the automatic TPS for the throttle linkage.... no computers at all....

Anyway, No regrets, at least until they pull my truck off the road due to emissions...

Hey man listen, these guys are just being nice, that motor is a piece of junk EVERYBODY KNOWS IT! You should send it to me and I will properly discard it.......Do you think he's buying it? Ha ha ha ha

GREAT start to ANY project-and I totally agree with the addition of an NV4500 and NP205, just add a doubler toe the 205 and you now have about a half million gear chices for you tcase. :wings:

Only reason I want the auto is because my Dodge is a stick. Getting tired of shifting all the time. I may end up doing a 47re and using a later year 241 with the elec speed sensor and adapting the speed sensor off the np271 when I upgrade the 241. I dont know, i'm still in the thinking about it stage, and have to get the divorce behind me first. I'll ck out cumminsforum 1st.
