what tools do you take/use?

After wheeling a JK for the last 6 years, I knew every nut and bolt and what i needed to fix it on the trail. Now i have a 2009 Tacoma that im building as an overland/expo rig and i want to detail my tool kit. Not wanting to carry a 200 piece tool kit with me on a daily basis, what do you guys use and how do you store it?

...And since it is shopping season there are many great tool deals this weekend.


  • Tool rool or bag...what brand/kind?
  • Is the tacoma metric or english or a mix? (JK had a mix)
  • any pre made tool kits ( like from craftsman) that are just the perfect combo?

To jump start your tool roll, 8mm (brake bleeders), 10mm, 12mm and 14mm (to take the rest of the truck apart). That's an exaggeration of course but those sizes in sockets and combo wrenches are a good start. And your usual suspects of pliers and screwdrivers, your headlamp. I keep a six inch Marlin Spike to pick and pry. The aforementioned 24mm. A set of metric allens. You could pick out the essentials but they're small of size and weight.

Everything is metric. Fractions are bad enough but who in their right mind would mix the two?

I have a Bucket Boss tool roll. It's held up well but I don't like it as it has opposing tool pockets top and bottom. I'd like all the pockets on one side so the tools don't overlap.

Anyways this is what I wrote:

Screw driver w/ exchangeable driver bits
Torque wrench (1/4, 3/8 & 1/2 drive)
Hi- lift
Snap straps, tree saver and U-shackles (in a bag)
Fire extinguisher abc rated
Jumper cables
Knee pad, because I'm getting older.
Rubber rug- for when I need to spend a long time under the truck
Ammo can, that has my OBA, air tank under the truck.
Tire patch kit
Lug wrench
Factory bottle jack
Medical kit
Spare oil & ATF (1 qt each).
Fuses
3 flash lights. And batteries
Reflective vest for those late night side of the road fixes.
CB Radio
Fire starter stick and matches
Super supion
Wheel chocks (2)
4x6x24 pressure treated lumber (4 pcs)

That's about it...
Other than the fire starter & med kit; I have used everything on this list at least a handful of time.
Either for me or helping others

All of these I carry all the time.

When on the trail, I bring extra belts, more fluid and gas, trail bars and drinks.

I just pull floor mats out of my truck to kneel on or lay down on when I need to do emergency repairs. I figure its better than laying down on dirt or snow. And I'm not carrying special single purpose items this way.

If weight is a consideration, you can confidently ditch everything in ODD sizing (put those in your favorite German car). Keep in mind, though that many of your accessories will have fractional size fasteners. Beyond simple hand tools, it becomes a matter which spare parts you intend to carry.

It helps if you can define what repair/adjustment jobs you'd like to able to perform while out on the trail.
The absolute minimum for me is 1. Change belts and hoses, 2. Change a wheel, 3. Tighten any fastener that might come loose Add Nitrile gloves, zip ties, and your favorite odd tools. This is a small kit in a small bag. If I'm going way out and alone, I add more in another box or case.

Do you have a list of things you carried in your JK? I am switching over wheeling to a JK and that would be helpful.

You need a 35 mm socket and a big *** breaker bar. When you blow a CV you will need this! Last October I changed my buddies CVs left on Sunday and right on Moday before we departed. No we were not being dumb, we were in a Bill Burke corse in the Oregon dunes. He runs to much lift and first gen Taco (mine) and second gen (his) are built very close. Also you need a manual I did his without one and guessed off of my experience. A torque wrench would help! Bill was good enough to let us use a torch on his axle nuts as the shop that over torqued his axle nuts didnt know how to use one. Wished I had pictures of this as it was dumping rain as I changed this, twice!
