Hi guys,

I have just purchased this without really knowing much about it. It costed me around 1000$ only.

It does run and drive and the underside of it looks very clean with no much of surface rust. planning to get it into good shape and use it around the off-road trucks here.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Yes, late 50's, 60's or early '70's model 404. The "pizza" wheels might indicate an earlier model. The build date will be on the plate under the hood on the firewall over the passengers feet. Let us know what it say?

It is not a Swiss version (no wedge top or circuit breakers) so originally was German, Belgium, French, whatever European military. What's that company name on the door?

The snorkel is a rare and very desirable item. The fold down bed sides are also desirable (some are fixed.)

Is that a heater between the seat backs? There's also something unusual in your last photo, in the space where the spare tire should be under the left front corner of the bed. What is that?

There have been many modifications to this truck for whatever special purpose it was modified for after military life.

Nice find!!! Where are you, and it? Please tell us more :)

Thanks for all that info !!

I didnt know that a plate exhist somewhere to tell me the build date and I'l make sure to check it tomorrow. I managed to get into the truck and took few more photos for your guys that I will attache hereunder.

I have no idea of the history of the truck but I bought it from a scrap componey and saved it from going to the crusher. It was working in the Desert for a turkish oil contractor called "fernas" or something like that for the last years of its life but I dont know from where it came before that. The contractor was operating in the "empty quarter desert" of arabia at the border between Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The thing u noticed between the seats is actually an airconditioner and the other thing u noticed under the front left corner of the bed is the A/C radiator or whatever it is called.

The chasis, the bed and all the underside of the truck looks very solid with no rust (expected as it was in the very dry desert). The tires are in a very good condition with maybe 90% thread left.

I managed to get into the car and the soft top is fully intact (no rips or rot in the fabric both outside and inside). The odometer readsabout 24,500 klm and I believe its the original mileage (the meter looks very new so am not sure if it belongs to a newer model or something). everything else in the cabin cluster gauges seems to be in place and not brocken/missing. The floors of the cab are solid wit zero rust. The doors are intact with zero rust too.

It has a (?diesel engine) which I got an X-mercedes diesel mechanic to look at and he said it looks like a different varient that he didnt see before. Can any one tell me anything about this engine from the pics ? Are parts available ?

Thanks.

This was posted on the other forum after knowledagble people noticed a multitude of changes

"Might I suggest you stop by where you bought the truck and ask for the name and the best way to contact the fellow who maintained, upgraded that truck? Would shortcut all the guessing game and make finding parts to repair things in the future tons and tons simpler."

Being in muscat and the oil field ........A Mr A Sing formerly of Bombay was probably the mechanic.......

we probably have about 20,000 Mr A Sings from Bombay in Muscat most illegal and working in the car souk.....

So your going to have to do the investigative work yourself.

Usually in Mutts there is only the original and one other doner if your are lucky

ie if you identify the doner vehicle hopefully you'l find all the ancillary change parts are from the same vehicle as well.

If Mr Sing worked in Wadi Kabir however it will be the host of multiple parts assembled into one truck.

A power wash to get that lovely desert dusting off will help allot with the internet sleuths and their investigations.

The good thing is with the age of the vehicle its all bolt on and weld on items,
if you can't find the exact replacement your local car souk will have something similar

WOW!

Here I sit in stunned disbelief! Sure wish I could come across something like that. Not much could hold me back from buying that thing! great find, congrats. Hope you are able to work out everything that it really needs.

The AC should be a really nice thing for you out there as well.

Thanks for sharing, Cheers

That's had some serious cutting done on the chassis, probably to install a different transmission. Looks like a fair amount of strength was take out of the chassis rails. I'd consider strengthening those rails if you plan on driving it hard. Someone suggested on the other board that an OE engine would be an OM615. I can say that it definitely is not an OM615.

He's posted more pictues over at Benzworld. The bellhousing on the engine and the transmission were definitely not originally designed to mate together. The adapter plate is between the end of the bellhousing and the transmission.
