What's Up With Your Switches

Sorry if this has been covered before, but what is the standard when it comes to mounting your rocker switches? The company I bought my switches from wants $50 for what looks to be a plastic face plate with labels. Well, I can do that with a $2 switch plate from Home Depot and the dremel. I have also seen guys using what looks to be just aluminum sheet stock which seems a little nicer than me hacking away at a plastic cover plate from HD.

Also, I see a lot of the 12v switches being installed without a receptacle box. Is this kosher and how somebody like Sportsmobile does their 12v systems?

Thanks for any info!

I just used a rectangular pie pan I bought at the dollar store and drill some holes with a "step drillbit" I bought at harbor freight. Anything that is the proper size/shape for where you want to mount it will work. Plastic will work also. As you can see I like my fusebox close to all my switches and use the xt60 connectors for everything 12 volts. I covered the pie pan with sticky kitchen cabinet decorator tape (cost 1 dollar for a roll at dollar store), to make it look neater.

I try to keep my switch installations invisible or at least looking like the vehicle came that way from the factory.. usually requires a bit of explaining when I sell the vehicle...
I hide the inside winch in/out switch to keep busy fingers from activating it.
I usually go with vehicle matching replacement headlight switches for auxiliary lighting, sometimes with an under the carpet antique style bright dim headlight switch for different combinations.
I like to put the front air locker on the bright dim function of the turn signal lever, sometimes moving the bright dim function to an antique style bright/dim foot switch. (usually the compressor is turned on and off via the interior light function of the auxiliary light switch; need to rewire the loom to switch the compressor on the ground side).

Enjoy!
