Where the heck do I put the shovel on my LJ!

I am lost.Need/want to mount a shovel on my Lj and can't seem to find a good location. I don't have or want a roof rack. I already have my high lift on the rear tire carrier and it doesn't seem like there is rrom left. I want to mount a long handled pointed shovel. Any ideas?

I have seen people put the long handle through the Frame Tube in the front of the jeep.

Others mount them to the roll bar on the inside.

Beowulf is right, the front cross-member of the jeep is a perfect candidate for that, unless you have some fancy disconnects that go through there. I also saw one fitted on the inside of the tub, by the side of the passanger seat with the blade towards the front, but it was definitely a short handle one. As far as the inside rollbars... are you sure you can't make do with a shorter handle? Maybe one of the collapsible camping/expedition models? If you can do that they (usually?) come with a storage bag so all the dirt doesn't track in the Jeep.

Also, Kaymar makes a unit that mounts to the tire carrier, goes through the rim, and mounts a shovel and axe.

There is not much room for one with a long handle. I posted this up before, but I mounted mine on the front.

I used to have one mounted below my highlift on the swing-away which had a fairly long handle. The other option would be Willy's-style, on the side, but you would have to drill a hole in the tub.

Hmm frame tube idea might work. As might the side mount. I have two kids and a big dog in the back of the jeep so that area is full of other junk. I like the long handle type of shovel, they are a lot easier on the back. Digging a pit latrine with a "D" handle sucks. Any other ideas? Keep em coming.

Well I fooled with it for a bit last night. Can't get the handle into the frame cross tube, bumper end is in the way. Side mount it out as well, sticks out too far.Wonder if I can stick it inside? Maybe.

If you have the stock front bumper, you could take off the rubber bumper(etts?) off the front facing side and use those screws to mount it directly to the front of the bumper. Another idea, although I am not sure if it would fit, is to bolt it to the hood on the underside or even on top, for that matter.

shovel mounting

a good option that will work with your current setup is something like this: http://www.jeep4x4center.com/intelligent-rack-mounting-system-i-rack-sb-2740.html

then you can pretty much mount anything you want to it and keep it away from the inside of your vehicle. Fist Grip clamps would be great here for holding a shovel.

a much more expensive option that is probably the best way to carry a high lift, pull pal, shovel, gas can would be to fab up the AEV JK rear tire carrier to your existing bumper. the biggest obstacle obviously is the cost of the carrier itself and the fab work to make the tire carrier fit the bumper you have. its a big task and a big expense but it really works amazingly well. I'm able to carry all the items mentioned above and keep the inside of my jeep free for my Dog and gear that i dont want to have wet or get exposed to the elements. There have been a few people who have mounted these on various bumpers; offhand i know of the Mopar rear bumper for a TJ/LJ and a Warn rear bumper for a TJ/LJ but this will fit pretty much any rear bumper i believe that currently doesn't have a tire carrier. if you do decide to tackle this endeavor let me know, i can give you all the measurements you need and fab ideas for when you start building it.

I have a smittybuilt rear bumper and tire carrier and a front bumper I fabbed that looks like a rock hard.

The front wraps around too far to get the shovel in the frame tube. The long handled shovel sticks up too far to mount on the rear. Might have to make the shovel come apart or mount it inside.

I don't have a picture, but when I take mine, I use my spare tire and a rachet strap. I pretty much attach it to the outside of the spare tire with the hook of the ratchet to the wheel spoke.

I have a 95 Yj Wrangler and a full size shovle. ;-)
