According to that all-par link, the waggys weighed 3758 when they were introduced in 63, but by 1975, R&T tested one at 4760. And the all-par chart listed the 1990 at 4500.
.
Don't get me wrong, the old full sizes were awesome, but they were not lightweights...

So they added over a 1000 pounds of stuff huh. How do you explain my 81 weighing 3700 pounds?
I could be wrong but I remember being how surprised I was when they gave me the piece of paper stating it was only 3700 pounds. Granted it was a basic 6 cyl and 4 speed. Unfortunately I sold the cherokee. Later on I purchased a scout. Once again I took that to the scale and weighed it. With the top off it weighed 3900ish pounds. I do miss the cherokee. I taught myself how to drive a stick in it. Driving all over the hills and mountains around my house.

I know the SJ's are not light weights but a reoccurring point is that the ZJ is sooo much lighter. The truth is they weigh about the same. My 1981 cherokee is a fat girl and weighs right at 4,000 lbs verified on a scale. Curb weight of a ZJ is reported to be 3926lbs.

Hey, sorry, I didn't mean to call anybody a liar. I've never even had the chance to drive one, much less weigh it.
.
I was just pointing out that, according to the link provided, the later models were supposed to be much heavier.
.
And according to this link, the early ZJ's curbed at just 3,575 lbs.
.
God knows you can't believe everything you read on the innerwebz, but if we do believe those two sources, then we're talking about a 1200 lb difference. That, my friends, is HUGE.

If you would have kept on reading in that link you have have found this;

1996-98 ZJ Dimension changes - (If not shown, it did not change)

Exterior:

Length: 177.2 in. Width: 69.3 in.
Height: 64.9 in. Wheel Base: 105.9 in.
Ground Clearance: 7.7 in. Curb Weight: 3926 lbs.

Since we are comparing a 1996 ZJ. So the real world difference is a whopping 74lbs. Hardly enough to sway a decision one way or the other.

And I apologize. I wasn't trying to start a peeing contest. Just showing my experience with them.

I also am not trying to make an issue over this but when I originally read this thread weight was mentioned several times. All I'm saying is weight between those two vehicles are not a big difference.

No, I saw that the later ones were heavier by 500#. That's why I said "early ZJs." But even comparing the later, 4000 is a far cry from 4500-4800 (all-par's numbers.)
.
Apparently, there is some pretty wide variance on what these individual rigs end up weighing. But generally speaking, going by published (average?) curb weights, a ZJ will be several hundred (even a thousand) pounds lighter.

But please don't think weight means strength.

Oh no no, just the opposite: I'm a big fan of lighter is better.
.
My XJ drives like a whole different vehicle when I take the 200# of doors off. It accelerates better, handles better, climbs better. I can only imagine the difference if I could shave six or even eight hundred pounds off it.
.
Conversely, adding 600# of armor, tools, and spares turns it into an absolute dog. Been there, done that, learned my lesson...

Buddha.

Finally in expo white.
Back on point, if I was looking for a budget DD it'd be the zj. Off road only I could go either way.
