Which Uniden CB for Taco ashtray location?

Hi all - I've been perusing this section to try to figure the best CB setup for my 2000 Taco, and I read a post by FlyingWil about a Uniden that (I think he said) fits into his ash tray location on his Taco.

Wil - which model is that, and did it really fit there? That would be great. I need to keep room for our 2M install when we get our licenses.

I appreciate all the great information here - I'm sinking the money into the best Wilson antenna (I'm still leaning toward mag mount - I simply cannot drill into the roof!) and coax I can afford, with the simpler radio.

Plus to red, negative to black. Not the worst thing ever. Be sure to put a fuse in there some place. I put a relay in that is switched with the ACC on the ignition, but that's just so I don't leave a radio on and run the battery dead.

Sounds like a good idea - we'd be prone to leaving it on, too.

I mounted a Uniden Pro 520XL CB radio in the ash tray location. It was very easy to make flush, and seems like a lot of others have problems making it flush. First, I removed the 2 screws that hold the ash tray slide out and cut the rear out with my dremel tool. To make it flush I used a heat gun and a screwdriver to make a small indentation on the air duct. I heated the duct up for about 20 seconds and pressed the area in with the back of screwdriver where the 90* coax elbow would hit. You only have to press it in about 1/4 of an inch. I used an 90* coax elbow to connect the Lil' Wil antenna coax to the CB. I them used 3M double sided mounting tape to secure it in place (it is a tight enough squeeze it really is not needed, but I wanted to be safe for future washboard roads).

I think the end results look great.

I ran the Coax for the antenna through the door sills on the passenger side. When I am not using the CB the antenna stores behind the rear seat and the cable is not visible. Total install took about 30 min.

Ok now that I have read the rest of the posts.... I wired mine to my blue sea aux fuse box, that way I do not have to have the taco in ACC, and comes in handy when you have allready set up camp and have people meeting you.

Also just make sure that if you use the ash tray location to use a 90* elbow or it will stick out too far. I also have the downgraded version of this I will give you if you pay for shipping. If interested shoot me an e-mail and it is yours!

Hey Wil, do you know if the radio console on the auto is the same as the manual? I know the shift console is different, but I can't remember if the radio portion was.

I am not 100% but I believe that they are the same for gen 1 and 2 Taco's, As for sick and auto they are the same as long as they are the same generation. I think the only variable is single DIN or dub Din for the radio. Make sense?

It is also a good idea to run the wires ( both Neg + Positive) directly to the battery for maximum voltage ( clean power)

Have you tried Radio Shack? I see them on ebay 'Right Angle' connector...

If you can find a good truck stop near you; Flying J, Giant and Pilot all come to mind, they will have them. Thats where I get 90% of my components for radio installs.
