Why is a Jeep the perfect Overlanding Vehicle

First off, I really don't think there is any perfect expedition vehicle, hey have their strong and week points. The trick is find the one that has the strong points you like and the week points you can live with and or get around.

That said I have a 2006 LJ Rubicon and for me it is my “Perfect” Overlanding vehicle for reasons too many to list. Not the least of which, as my wife says, “You know everything about every jeep made”. Funny enough this is a major reason for her wanting a new Unlimited. HEY...who am I to argue, right?

The short list of short comings I have identified and are overcoming are, but not limited to;
Range – Installing Gen Right 31.5 Gallon tank and making arrangements for Jerry Cans with goal of 1000km range unrefueled
Storage – Customized Rack with off the self solutions should give me the space I need with addition of a AT (extra fuel on trailer also)

Jeeps are by far the most customizable vehicles on the market. Doubt me? Google Jeep Accessories and see home many billion hits you get.

I have to agree, you're absolutely correct on at least 2 points: the initial question is not a good one, and the jeep is probably the most easily customizable vehicle around...at least in my sphere of experience.

This is a little bit like asking why the Jeep TJ is 'better' or 'worse' than a Defender 80/90. Your spouse's comment is very material...is the fact you know "everything about" the vehicle less important than the vehicle itself? I think not. In fact, I'd say that what you know about your vehicle and the people you know personally (and can contact via phone) who know all about your vehicle would have to count for a LOT. Having an answer to the question, "How do I fix this?" would be priceless when you have to...fix something.

Looking at this from my view point I have to ask how much fuel will you carry in addition to the Gen Right.

I would say cross country your planning figure would be about 12 mpg and you are wanting to go 621 miles w/o refueling, that is a requirement for right at 52 gallons of fuel used.

BUT and if I understand you, then 621 miles is really a requirement for a total of 1,242 miles or 2000 KM.

For planning purposes ONLY the range is one half of the requirement. If the requirement is 600 miles then your range is 300 miles. To use your numbers you stated your range is 621 miles, then the requirement is 1,242 miles.

When the expedition is over I want fuel in my tank, food in my box, water in my cans...

Don't get me wrong, I am not throwing stones, just trying to understand you approach.

It's perfect FOR ME because it's mine, I bought it new, exactly the color and equiptment I wanted and I'm building it myself exactly the way I want it.

When I start my next project vehicle it will be perfect too...FOR ME!
