Wildernest modification

Hey all. This is my first time posting and im trying to get some suggestions and opinions on this potential project.

I have a wildernest topper on my Nissan frontier and I am considering removing the tent and using the hinged top to increase the headroom in the back of my truck. In other words rather than open up a full 180 degrees then tent pops from there just have it hinge somewhere between 45 and 90 degrees and have it work more like a hinged pop top if that makes any sense.

The reasons I want to do this is to make set up faster and easier. I do really like the topper as is but set up and tear down takes some time and I would like to be able to stop and camp then pack up and go quickly. It is also a bit sketchy in intense weather. Dosnt seem like wildernest toppers do that well in wind or snow.

Has anyone done anything like this or heard of this sort of modification? Any experience or suggestions would be great.

thanks!

Sounds like you're after a Westfalia or Dormobile type thing.

I suppose you could modify your 'Nest with a limiting cable or an arm of some sort. I'd think you'd still have the issue that the roof would want to either open fully or close back up with the wind.

Also, you wouldn't want to sleep on the regular mattress anymore? I mean, that's the sort of the real benefit to the 'Nest is flipping it open and having a nice 3" thick, full size bed and not have to pack and unpack everything in the back of the truck.

If you're trying to stabilize the 'Nest in the wind you know there are two 'D' loops on each side to guy it out. They're up under the awning at the edge of the roof over the windows. The only time I've ever had to take down my 'Nest was in the Airport on the White Rim when a storm rolled through. That was the most wind I've ever experienced, it was literally like being in the jet wash behind a 747 at the airport. I've never been in the eye of tornado personally but if I had to guess what it would be like, that was it. Even taken down the truck was still rocking and rolling like crazy.
