Winch Maintenance

OK, so I used the MM pe8000 on the XJ the other day and it sounded like it needs grease in the gears. The mfg. instructions say that it is greased up at the factory and that you don't need to add any. I'm not sure about this.
I have searched here and on the www and can't find anything on re-lubing the gears on this thing.
Has anyone done this ? Is it difficult or as easy as removing the screws on the end cap and shooting some grease in there ?

Thanks for any info or direction on where to find more info.

I'm not sure how in depth you want to go but I took mine apart to clock it (change orientation of release to better suit the ARB bumper).

One side is engagement the other should be geared and an electric motor (obviously the electric motor doesn't get grease) but take pictures and go slow.

The M8000 is a lovely winch to take apart - nice and simple

What you need though is a clean area and a dirty area

Unless you specifically like small electric motors leave the motor alon and fastened to the 'chassis' or 'end plate'

Leaving the tie bars in place undo the ring of allen bolts (carefully) this will allwo you to draw the whole gear box off - then strip it 'in line' , cleaning all the grease off as you go. Lay the clean bits in line on a nice sheet of paper in your clean area.

Use hylomar as a sealent when you reassemble but only a tiny smear.

As for grease, all it needs is a LIGHT coating on all the mating faces of something decent like LM2. Over greasing is a common problem
