Winch mounting upside down??

I have a Milemarker winch mounted on a reciever bumper mount. It currently blocks my fog lights which I would like to use on road trips. Rather than taking up interior space would mountig the winch upsidedown be detremental to the winch? I can always flip it when I go off road. Thanks in advance. Mike

A regular winch can be mounted on any plane unless it's a hydraulic winch or something that uses liquid lubricants and has some specific note that says otherwise. My ARB bumper for my disco mounted the winch upside down and my ARB bumper for my F250 has it mounted feet forward (sideways, this is actually the best direction for heaviest load).

Not necessarily true. Some winches are only designed to operate feet forward (8274 for example) and others are designed to mount only feet down (9.5ti for example). Now, storage, I see no reason an electric or even PTO wouldn't be fine, though it would be worth a call to the manufacture to make sure your not missing something. While some (M8000) could be mounted top, bottom or forward, I can't think of a single winch that would be OK with the winch mounted with the feet back placing them in tension.

winch mounting

All I am asking is whether is is OK to drive with the winch upside down not operate the winch upsidedown.

I was thinking the same thing. If the gears use heavier-weight grease for lubrication, then you should probably be fine. But if it uses light-weight oil, wouldn't there be a possibility of things not being lubricated correctly? I mean if there's some kind of sump at the bottom for the gears to pick up oil as they rotate, wouldn't it cause a problem if that sump is no longer at the bottom? I have no idea what the inner workings of a winch look like, so this could be way off base; I'm just thinking from a pure engineering standpoint (having spent time maintaining many pieces of equipment with gearboxes in a chemical plant).
