Winch problem

I have a MileMarker PE8000 on my truck. I had taken it off to put on an ARB bumper, and during the process I found that my solenoid pack had taken a dump. Im going to order a new one, but Ive got a problem in the mean time.

I want to put it in to the bumper just so Im done with it. I can wire it later. My problem is that the cable is loose and i dont want it falling out and dragging or catching on something.

Would it work, to connect the winch directly to the battery to spool it in??? My idea was to install the winch, roll it up by hand as tight as possible, then connect it direct just to tighten the hook up a little to keep the cable from coming undone on the road.

Does that sound plausible???

It would work by connecting one of the F terminals with + terminal and then connecting power to the other F terminal. But they do spark, and im not sure you would want to hold it for long. Overall I think it is a bad idea, from a safety point of view.

why do you need to spool in the cable? can you not just install the winch, fairlead, cables and then when you get the solenoid, spool on your rope... It wont take long!

alternatively, you can get the rope quite taught by hand, but it will be a PITA spooling it all on manually to then have to spool it all off to spool it all on again under tension!

all the rope is on the winch. i just want to tighten the last foot or so to keep it from unraveling too badly. i may just do that. the hard part after all is getting the winch in there. might just take the cable off until the solenoid comes in.

You can hook it up directly to your battery or connect a jump box or jumper cables to it to pull it in and tighten it up for a few feet with no issues.

I have done this before with no issues or problems.

Maybe Ill try it then. Just finished fixing my clutch handle on it so now it will freespool again. Get it as tight as I can by hand and then hook it up. All im looking for is a foot, if that.

Wish I had taken some pictures of the guts of this thing. Could have posted a writeup on making the PE8000 fit in the Tacoma ARB bumper. Oh well Ill take a few of the install.
