Winch sounds, well sick!

I have a 9k T-max outback and I had to winch myself into the garage the other day (Gods must be crazy moment) and noticed the winch or more specifically the solenoid pack which is sealed didn't sound right. The connector was having issues as well when I would plug it in. I know the winch is a 3 wire like most of the rest, and I"m guessing I could run a warn solenoid pack with warn controller. Yes. No.

Solenoid packs are rebuild-able, if you don't want to try it yourself find a good electrical shop in your area or a 4x4 shop to take on the task. We have had some issues with the T-Maxx winches we have at work, mostly the motors sound like they are dying.

It's deff the solenoid packs as the winch and pack are located separately making the noise maker unmistakable. If they are the same solenoids as the warn units they can e purchased for $7 from auto parts store. I will have to pull it apart and see which they are using, and rest assured MP I'm using your Superline XD :).

I know that my friends have had problems with their Warn solenoids in the past and rebuilt them, I imagine that the solenoids are pretty universal but can't say for sure.

Warn offers them at $25 ea. and auto parts offers the same for $7, they look the same and test the same OHM meter.

Learning to work on these is something that every electric winch owner should do.

The basic concept you need to learn is that there are four selonoids. two provide the positive and two provide the ground.

When you engage the "in" button one pair is used and when you push the "out" switch the other pair is used.

Before they fail if you pop the cover off you can mark them by using the winch controller and a test light to see the direction of the winch when each one is powered. Then when one fails on the trail(and they will) you can swap out the offending part in a matter on min.

Buy an albright solenoid.

Timmy, whilst I agree that a sealed solonoid pack is the way to go, especially in a humid/mud environ. they are not without their problems.

I got a bit stuck on a rocky trail up north recently and rather than risk breaking the truck over a tricky section, decided to winch off another vehicle. Solonoid pack was clicking and nothing was happening :Wow1:

Anyway, I managed to drive the section in the end, when i got home i cleaned all the earths, checked everything, still nothing. Gave a tap with Land Rover tool #1 (Hammer) and it broke into life. I guess the internals were not making contact. I have put it down to lack of use and will endevour to test my unit far more often.

Just shows that even these are not fit and forget units.

Just my experience.

Ok so I have been here before, sick winch with noise coming from solenoid pack indicates it's not the winch but the pack. So I sourced the actual solenoid which is new and fandangly not at all what I'mused to and had I been able to get a warn solenoid pack (old school) I would have purchased that. But alas I couldn't find one cheap and spent the $69+SH to get a new fandangly T-Max (Westin) Solenoid.

Wow did I Have wrestle this thing back together. All to perhaps figure out why my winch pack sounded sick. As I was complaining at how this went there and that went there I though back about when I uninstantiated the winch and didn't remember having to remove a light ground wire as it was already off. Short of being furious at myself for something so stupid I learned a lesson I thought I already knew, ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GROUND WIRES 1ST! Well there goes $80 for nada at least I Have a spare.
