Window Insight Disco I

Gents,

I have suffered my first window regulator failure. Not a big deal, other than missing the wind in my (ever fading) hair. My question comes as I look through the manual and notice hand crank windows...

Has anyone here ever switched out the guts of their electric window equipped doors with the hand operated counterpart?

Here's to hoping-

Thanks,
DB

I don't know of anyone who has actually done this, but I am planning to attempt this in one of my Discos soon. You can buy the parts from Brookwells in the UK, and most likely other places. Not exactly cheap to do with new parts, but will shed more weight and complexity from the vehicle, which is my aim. I'm going to install manual mirrors as well.

I'm going to have my wife bring back a couple of manual regulators from her visit home in Dec.
It shouldn't be a difficult conversion at all.

I had the same thought (easy switch) when comparing the image in the book and my door. The structure seems non specific.

Did they ever import Disco's with manual regulators into the U.S.?

I don't mind editorial at all-
Unless it's the political variety...:sombrero:

Electric windows have always struck me as the counter answer to reliability.

IIRC correctly Scott considered a crank window change on the Expo West D1 and it required changing out the doors, which would mean a call to a breaker in the UK.

Think about this "upgrade".

Your regulator failed.
Do you know that the manual window regulator is different and/or stronger?
What are you really upgrading?

If you had an electrical failure such as the motor, switch or ECU it would be logical to look to a manual set-up, but I'm not so sure that the fix you're proposing would even solve the problem you have.

They're different, of course. One operates with an electric motor and one operates with a hand crank. The upgrade is making the rig more simple. With electric windows you've got switches, wiring, ECU's, the motor, etc. With a crank, you've just got a regulator and crank. Lightweight and simple. Less to go wrong. For example, on one of my Discos the front windows won't work when the headlights are on, and both rear ones quit at the same time. I bypassed the ECU and they still don't work. Been trying to find the fault on them for months. With manual windows, the problems wouldn't even exist.

I didn't ask which system was more simple.
I asked him to think about what actually broke.
