Winging a 5x8 overland "teardrop" - build thread

I originally purchased a military trailer for my jeep but that thing was too heavy. I had a lightweight 5x8 trailer so I basically built a new frame under the angle iron using 2x1 steel. I put in new spring hangers but left the stock 2 leaf springs and put in a 3500lb axle with brakes and a spring over axle conversion.

The "tow rig" for this will be an 83 CJ5 with stretched front (rear stretch in the rear at the end of the year.). The CJ5 has a 2001 i6 from a Jeep TJ and 5.13 gears. With 35's I can only do about 55mph so after the stretch I'll be going back to 38"+ tires (that will get me 60mph at a descent rpm lol). If I'm going crawling the overland trailer won't come. If we are playing out in the woods or in swamp the jeep will tow. I don't have a tow rig or trailer big enough for both the jeep and camper.

I'm completely winging this as I complete other projects. I'm working on a Jeep TJ, repairing a fold out camper, and rebuilding a gator for my dad (carb/motor, broken steering, all plastic broken) so it's slow moving.

The goal is a base camp for kayaking and fishing. It needs to carry 3 kayaks and have an AC. No need for heat.

Done:
  • Reinforce frame with 2x1
  • 3500lb Axle swap and flip
Here's the plan:
  • 4' roof at galley and front. 5' roof in middle
  • 35" tires on 16" 5x4.5" jeep wheels (2" spacers). I chose 5x4.5 16" since it matches my truck, while my CJ is 5x5.5. Long hauls will be with the truck! Already have 4 of the XD wheels in the picture.
  • Wing the framing based on some sketches. I'm thinking I will reuse the existing railing and put a 1x1 piece the full length of the railing. Outside sheeting will be thin plywood with aluminum. There will be no bending.
  • Propane tank
  • Flip up door instead of swing out.
  • Small rack mounted awning
  • Small galley for storing grill, coolers, and gear.
  • Solar system
  • (2) 6gal water jugs. Additional water will have to go on the rack.
  • Fold out queen bed
  • Dual batteries
  • Directional cell phone extender on tower (will flip up and have a remote)
  • 30+ inch split screen monitor that will function as a TV.
  • 5" sliders along the entire sides for protection
I'll add sketches in the next post.

What do you think about using the existing side railing? It's obviously going to be warped and unlevel so it's going to make framing more complicated, but I would like the extra space. of having it outboarded.

Since my suspension has practically no flex, I'll be running the tires at a lower PSI to act as suspension. Total weight should be under 1k.

So I found a couple problems. I had already bought a tongue jack and it only travels 10". Also, my landing gear I ordered is far too short (the stupid fold down ones). I've got two trailers here right now with that landing gear and were replacing 1 with scissors and the enclosed we just bungee them in place. They suck. I'm going to go with the really tall slide out support style on all 4 corners. Does anyone know of a cheap source for low capacity ones? The one's I am finding are $100ea!

I'm about to go do the side rail supports and mount the real wheels. The tires are bald on the wheels so I won't know the exact height, but I have decided to do 33" tires which would give me an additional 6.5" of height over the roller tires on it now.

Bonus pics of what I'll be towing this little guy with. I work from home so I'm looking at ditching the dinky little truck and A.) Getting an old dually and a Cherokee or B.) Financing a low mile 4x4 Tundra or F150. I haven't had a car payment in years and have just always had project cars with my truck as a reliable ride (sold my 64 bug on 69 chassis last year... supppppper fun project).

So my lowest frame rail is 24 inches and lowest hang up point besides axle is 22 inches.. I have a set of those but I hate that style (2 trailers with those jacks failing). I'm looking for 4 corner posts that just "drop" straight down.

Right now:
  • Change tongue and add 2" surge coupler and extend it. Should I go with 11ga (almost .120 wall) at $29 for 12 feet or 3/16" at $45 for 10 feet? The trailer shouldn't weight too much, but then again it's going to see some beating. 39lbs at 10ft for 11ga and 57lbs at 10 feet for 3/16.
  • The jack in the picture is to replace the one on my boat trailer. I'll be using a standard jack (no wheel).
  • I'm going to cut off the old side rail instead of using it. It will be less work overall and I have plenty of 1x1.

These screws for the deck don't work. Alternatives??

Why not just make them out of 2" square tubing? Get about a foot of material to go over it. Cut it into 3" sections to hold the 2". Drill some holes to run pins, or bolts. Weld a flat plate on the bottom of it as a foot. Carry some chunks of 1" wood, the size of the foot piece for when the holes you drill aren't quite right.

I used something like these

https://m.ebay.com/itm/2-Pack-LONG-SWING-DOWN-16-22-5-Stabilizer-flip-RV-Jack-Trailer-Levelers-cargo/202206254765?_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIM.MBE&ao=1&asc=20161006002618&meid=7aff8b9da2ce4d16910201ab6f32fbac&pid=100694&rk=13&rkt=30&sd=291393039489&itm=202206254765&_trksid=p2385738.c100694.m4598

For my rear stabilizers. Just be careful, they sell a short and long one. You’ll probably want the long one. I was nervous that they wouldn’t be long enough, but they were. I haven’t done it yet, but I’m considering putting them on the front too. Here’s a pick of how they turned out on the trailer

These are exactly what I used on my TD, front and back.

This project is on hold.. I got the walls but... I've been busy repairing a popup and.... building up my girls recently acquired XJ. She was tired of waiting on the trailer.... Starting a new thread on it.

97 xj i6, 6" lift, 9k winch. currently on 31s but putting 33s back on it. KM safari rack, smitty tent.. everything acquired for the trailer is getting repurposed for now. Instant gratification. Hitting the road THURSDAY then we will know what we want and how to better finish the trailer..
