Would you?

They made more than two of them ;)

Say you could get $1500 for your built 3rds w/ARB's... you can buy two new drop in 3rds for ~$2750, net difference of just $1250, assuming you can do the 3rd member R&R yourself. Best deal is to just regear your current 3rds. Again, assuming you can do the R&R, it should only be ~$1000 for the regear. However, I'd rather pony up the extra $250 and have brand new lockers (the latest generation ARB's have some nice upgrades). That is of course assuming you can get $750/3rd out of your setup. I've sold used ARB 3rds for that in the past pretty quickly, in fact for a bit more if I know the history on the parts.

The 3rds were built 6 years ago and might have 2,000 miles on them. Right after I did the re-gear I met my wife so the 40 got parked for awhile. :D Also at that time I had a roll cage that was over the top safe but a real pain to get in and out of which also cut down on my desire to drive it anywhere.

I apologize but I have been with a 16 month old all day and I am fried, what do you mean by R&R? :D

Sounds like the HF has an OD? (Excuse the LC ignorant here.) Would it be enough to knock those 4.88's back to be effectively a 4.11 or so? That would knock 484 RPM off (3043 to 2560) according to one calculator.

Since the vehicle is already set up for 35's I suspect that optimising for 33's will involve more than just bolting on a set of tires.

EDIT: "R&R" = remove & replace.

The H55F has about an 18% overdrive. With 3.73 gearing and 31" tires I could cruise 70+ (about 73, IIRC) at 2500 RPM in my FJ60. It's as much a brick as a 40.

Kurt you are evil, and a pretty good salesman. :D

I'm still pushing for you to do the H55F, and I would send you to the Toyota Dealership to get the biggest part :D

The H55F is a killer swap, but its alot of work in an FJ40 too, you'll need a "Split-Case" from an 80-87' FJ40, you'll have to build a crossmember, you'll have to rework drivelines and your doghouse and you'll have to rework your parking brake. If you were paying someone to do everything for the swap, turnkey, it can easily become a $4000 swap. Parts alone can hit $3k (trans, clutch, crossmember, case & rebuild kit, drivelines, etc).

Again, I love my H55F, there's nothing like dropping it into 5th and hitting 60mph just as the diesels pass me :D

Holy crap, I just saw a 4.88 diff with ARB go for $1400 on another off road site. On a side note I sat down with a gearing calculator the other night and realized that going from 4.88s and 35s to 4.56s and 33s is roughly the same thing. So it's going to be 33s and 4.11s or 35s and 4.56s and I am sort of leaning towards the 35s.

If you like the way it operates everywhere but on the freeway, learn to stay off the freeway or drive slower when you do take the interstate, and just live with it. If you do most of your driving on the interstate and just can't take the high revs, change gearing to match smaller tires. I would not bother trying to increase tires to match gears. That is thinking the problem through from the wrong direction and begins to stretch the limits of your front axles.

After seeing the LC, I say sell the FJ for "X" amount. Report "X"-"MDK" to wife and save "MDK" amount for upgrades to the Brown LC.

Here is a pic of the old girl in my incredibly messy garage. I tried a set of 33-10.5s on and took some pics but when my wife saw the pics with the 33s said looked terrible so 33s are out. I absolutely love this truck, but after being in an accident where my Tacoma got totaled I do worry about getting in an accident in the 40. I am going to spend some time just driving it, maybe up to Gorman next week just to get to really know her again and then decide what to do.
