the way I see the diesel option now is there is no monetary savings for them now, you pay more for the engine, then you pay up to 15% more for the fuel it self here. So you are just better off getting a hemi in the jeep and having the quiet operation of the gas v8 compared to a rattle can in the front of your not very sound proof JK. Then add in the extra maitenence costs associated with diesel motors as well.

The hemi would make much better sense. Plus a Hemi in a JK will bet better milage than a Hemi in a 1500 series Because of weight and sheer size of the vehicle. MDS, 6 spd tranny and hemi will beat the pentastar in gas milage im willing to bet.

Hmm, I know I'm comparing Grand Cherokees here, but this is what fueleconomy.gov shows for annual fuel costs:

$2,500 = EcoDiesel
$3,450 = Hemi, using Regular gas
$3,600 = Hemi, using Midgrade gas (Jeep recommended)

That's based on driving 15K miles a year,
55% of those miles being stop-and-go,
and the following fuel prices:
$3.68/gallon = Regular gas
$3.86/gallon = Midgrade gas
$3.96/gallon = Diesel

You can play around with those numbers here.

From what I've read from folks that have been running Hemis in their JKs over the past few years, doesn't seem like they're getting better mileage than the old 3.8. Lots of torque though. :)

I've never heard the 2.8L diesel, but my roommate has a GC with the EcoDiesel, and I'm not sure I'd call it a rattle can. If it's below freezing outside, and you're standing literally right next to it, you might notice it's a diesel.

The cost of diesel varies greatly with state/country. Not everyone lives where you do.
New diesels are not "rattle can". Have you driven a new Diesel GC or recent VW diesel? I guarantee you wouldn't know it was a diesel from the sound alone.

It doesn't in the Grand Cherokee, It won't in the JK.

V6 GC
Mileage 4x4: 17/25

Hemi GC
Mileage 4x4: 14/21

For proof, we have the numbers from lots of guys on the AEV forums who report mileage around 14MPG with Hemi swaps into JKs.

Why are so many old myths about diesel still so common-place in North America? I simply do not understand.

We have been hearing rumor and speculation on the JK since 2006, but the reality is that sales never slowed to where they needed to add another engine to boost sales again. If I had to guess the same will hold true on the redesign.
It sucks when sound logic is depressing. LOL

Wonder if CAFE targets will make them reconsider that trend?

We will see if CAFE makes any changes to the power train. I would expect to see other changes to make the Jeep lighter and more aerodynamic before a diesel like aluminum, non folding windshields, changing the fully boxed frame to a c-channel frame (like the YJ and TJ).

I could be completely off with my guesses, and we really won't know for sure until sometime in mid to late 2017.

Wow, 14mpg. that is suprising. I have driven both a GC and jetta with desiel....and no compared to old diesels they are queit but are louder compared to gas engines. with the lack of sound proofing in the JK I think it would be really loud. I have not driven a pentastar jk yet because if its that much better, I am going to want one. ha ha

I drove the AEV J8 with the 2.8 diesel and it is definitely louder and less refined than the 3.8 V6 that was out at the time. At the same time I think AEV was claiming they were getting in the 18-20mpg range which was a few mpg better than the gas equivalent. I don't think that the GC diesel to the GC V6 or Hemi are apples to apples comparisons quite as much as the diesel JK to gas JK comparison. With the newer 3.6 V6 engine the margins for better efficiency on a diesel are slimmer, and many diesels aren't getting as good of performance and reliability as they were in pre 2006 versions when the newer emissions were implemented in the United States.

The should make a wrangler jeans jeep wrangler, with denim seats and denim paint job and red tag tailgate. Brett Favre and Drew Brees would sell a zillion of them.

don't laugh they made a levi's version. I had the seats out of one in my cj beast I used to own. Had a 360 v8 in it 3 speed standard and 31x12.50x15. she was a beast!

A RAM 1500 diesel was able to get 38mpg on a 1000 mile road trip with 4 people, luggage and a ton of weight.

Obviously they were hypermiling a little, but I think it's a safe bet a diesel Wrangler will get significantly better mileage than a gas V6 or HEMI.

Im down for a 3 row suburban esque Jeep. I would sell my Suburban in a heartbeat then!

x2!!

Im thinking Ford Excursion like but with much better MPG...solid axles, good tow cap, room for at least 8, good cargo area in the rear.
