Autoblog says Chrysler is unveiling a hybrid version of the Wrangler today. Anyone have details?

nice...400mile range, huh?

I'd like to see a diesel hybrid. that would sway me to drink the JK koolaid.

otherwise i'm stickin' to my LJ. :D

I have a 400 mile range in my LJ right now. That is even for city driving. On the highway I have a range of 535 miles.

Now that does not mean that I have a super efficient engine. It just means I have fuel capacity over 30 gallons. :)

Now that is interesting. To the best of my understanding, Toyota hasn't figured out how to make their systems stable enough to endure off road use. If Jeep puts one in a Wrangler it will be interesting to see how they make it off road worthy, assuming that they will make it so.

They won't bother ruggedizing...

They know that 99.99% of all Jeeps never leave the pavement and anyone that would take one off the pavement would never buy a hybrid.

I like the idea of a hybrid or pure electric 4x4 truck. The state of the art isn't there yet for it to be practical IMO.

Specs released by Chrysler: plug-in recharge, will run 40 miles on electric motor alone, 400 mile range burning 8 gallons of gas (50 mpg), torque around 275 ft-lb, two or four wheel drive.

On the JKBoard, people are talking about the absence of a transfer case lever in the interior shots. This might mean that the 4x4 lacks a low range. Or maybe the vehicle shown in the photos doesn't really have all its working parts in place yet.

Sounds interesting. We'll be able to buy a Wrangler EV in 2011, I believe. I'd like to learn more about where they placed the battery pack, and how heavy the vehicle is. I think that the EV powerplant would fit in the Grand Cherokee, too.

I particularly like the comment that Chrysler is looking at placing electric motors in the four wheels in future vehicles. The onboard gasoline engine would be used solely for charging the batteries. This would eliminate the transmission, transfer case, diffs and drive shafts. With the diffs out of the way, effective ground clearance would increase. And if you have four motors, you'd have the ability to limp home if one of the motors failed.

They won't... they'll just put a "trail rated" badge on it and then a warranty clause that precludes offroad use. If Toyota can't do it Jeep sure won't be at the forefront ;)

I like how they're just glossing over the small diesel option and going strait to electric based hybrids. Personaly I want nothing to do with these systems. They may be great for road going cars, but adding electronics has yet to yield a better Off-road vehicle (including the New Cruiser IMO).

Obviously Chrysler is trying to attract more buyers to their vehicles with all these new Hybrid options, but frankly what ever happened to small batch specialty vehicles like the J8 being made available for us??? Why can teh rest of the world have it but the US can't??? It makes no sence.

Cheers

40 mile range all electric is what caught my attention.

My office is 1.6 km from the house. Call it a mile. It's a bit more return because of one ways and I might swing by the market or the bank. Obviously this is why I bicycle in the summer months. (I've put less than ten miles on the Jeep in 9 days, driving to the office only once in that span) For winter commuting though, I'd still virtually never burn any gas in day-to-day life until I hit the mountain trails or Edmonton for football, etc.

40 miles is not much battery. 12 years ago my College's EV was doing 100 miles on lead-acid's and going further on NiMH's.

Marketing has taken the ISGM* concept and re-named it to make themselves look 'green.'
Put me in the "Not Buying It" box.

Oh I understand, and make no mistake, I'd rather have the diesel. I also question hybrid technology battery performance in the climate we can get here a third of the year. I'm sure it works peachy at trade shows in Vegas or demos in Los Angeles. Give it a whirl here in January.

Eh? All this naysaying on a so-called "green" message board? I welcome the electric Wrangler and believe the technology is there to support an off-road habit, as well. It's the marketers and bean counters that won't let them do it right so guys like us get to use it.

There's only one reason the new electric Wrangler won't be good for wheelers...pussification. That's right, to get more money for it, they'll pretty it up and call it the "luxury" version and it won't be a trail-worthy vehicle. We won't see EV in a Rubicon unless they can get $40k for it.

You watch. You'll see.

Here's the "superman x-ray eyes" view of the Wrangler EV

JeepEV.jpg

The drawing shows the purple Li-Ion cells stored under the passenger
compartment. Maybe those deep water crossings are not a good idea!
The yellow lines are electric cables. I'm not sure what the red box is
at the rear axle.

The drawing shows a dinky gasoline engine (2 cylinder? 3 cylinder?) sitting
sideways on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Its job is only
to power a generator. The Wrangler's motive power is electric only.
