Does anybody know if this would be a good inverter for a Unimog sized camper?

Reason is I found a brand new one a guy is selling for under half price...and I am just wondering if I should jump on it.

Any opinions or experience with this model?

I think it is a great unit. It is rated at 2000 watts so can run a lot of stuff. I like the fact that i has remote monitoring capability and battery charging management all in one box.

I see them on sale occasionally for around $1k. I would be all over it for $500. I am looking for something very similar for my expedition trailer. If you pass on it pm as I may snatch it up.

Personally, I would NOT recommend it. This unit is a modified sine wave output. It is dirty power. If you are using it for thing like hot plates or devices with out electronics inside it would be fine. However, if you are using it for TVs computers or other products with interal processing, find a "Pure Sine Wave" output. They cost more but you wont blow anything up. The unit like you have above are only meant to run devices for a very short amount of time.

What would you recommend for a 1000W and 2000W to run his Unimog? Would you recommend running 2 units a pure sine and a modified sine to help with overall cost?

What it would actually come down to is determining what loads are the sensitive loads. You could run the lighting on the cheapy inverter or anything that is pretty much a "dumb" load while the sensitive devices would be run by the pure sine wave (TV, computer, possibly microwave). The fewer sensitive electronics, the smaller the pure sine wave inverter would have to be. The down side of this would be having to run seperate cirucit and label the pure sine wave sockets.

I run a modified sine wave unit, it runs everything just fine.

MSW units have been used in hundreds of thousands of high end motorhomes for the last 15 years from these three companirs (which are all now part of XANTREX) Trace Engineering, Heart Interface, Statpower.

The unit linked above was Trace Engineering's unit supplied to RV manufacturers back in the day.

Xantrex bought all three companies 8-9 years ago.

The Xantrex link above, was one of STAPOWER's inverters.... which by the way, is an INVERTER only, and has no charging circuit built in. If you went with something like that, then you'd need a charger too....

Did you mean Unimog sized or is it mounted on a Unimog?The reason for asking is that Unimogs and most European trucks are 24vdc.
In my experience, true sinewave is the way to go, I have too much sensitive electronic stuff (some of which I have blown up such as a small battery charger for power tools and an IBM laptop powersupply, both failures were traced back to a modified sinewave (xantrex) inverter.I am not blaming the xantrex itself because I use one in my worktruck to power emergency lights and a grinder but the modified sinewave output.When running the grinder on modified sinewave you can tell by how it sounds and the fact that it heats up faster (shorter duty cycle).

I do remember that DEWALT cordless tool battery chargers go POOF when powered by MSW. the power up, then the smoke comes out.
