Guys and gals:
I just completed a little review and evaluation of the FT-1500 installed in my Jeep:

I think it's a pretty slick set up. The radio is mounted in the center console, and then we've put in a "remote" plug for the mic handset. Used a cool bracket that mounts on the tail light for the antenna. Check it out . . .

It's a discontinued unit, but the FT-2800 is a similar unit with more power.

The FT-1500 was a great little radio - talk about being built like a brick.
Actually it's real replacement is the FT-1802M which is also very small, and has controls that mirror the much larger FT-2800.

But I do miss the cool blue glow of the 1500.

I really REALLY have to disagree on the 1500, Its a nightmare to use mobile. Unless you only use preprogrammed memory channels and never want to talk simplex where you need the sequelch control the radio is ok, but a as a general purpse radio forget it. ITS a pain to navigate any option while in motion. Even the simplest task stationary is a mutli button press. From a technical stand point its not a bad little radio and they make nice base or packet station but I would never want one mobile again. I had to use mine over Christmas when my 706 was in the shop. I glad the 706 is back in the mobile and the 1500 is back on packet.

However, I've programmed it to include a few simplex frequencies that a few of my buddies agreed upon. Before embarking on a trip, we'll agree on a programmed frequency and go. If there's a problem, I've programmed one of the handset functions to switch from MR to VFO. Making the best out of some limitations.
