The National Park Service has released its Winter Use Plans Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway.

The Park Service is accepting public comment on the Winter Use Plans until May 31, 2007. The document can be found at: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkId=111&projectId=12047&documentID=18456, as can the electronic comment form.

The DEIS outlines the Park Service’s proposal for snowmobile and snowcoach use in the parks. The goal is to ensure that visitors to the parks have a wide range of winter recreational opportunities, and at the same time do not harm or impair park resources or values. The DEIS will evaluate major issues, including social and economic issues, health and human safety, wildlife, air quality, natural soundscapes, visitor access and circulation, and visitor experience.

Public participation is important in the successful development of this project, which must be completed for the parks to remain open for winter access in the long term. Comments can be submitted electronically at the above Web site or by mail to Winter Use Planning Team, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 82910. Comments will not be accepted by phone, fax or email.

Thanks for posting this Wil.

Hopefully anyone who supports public use of our National Parks will take a few minutes to send in a comment supporting Yellowstone staying open to travellers in the winter.
