York blew - how easy to fix?

Hi everyone.

I bought a York compressor kit, and blew one or more gaskets when testing it. The guys who sold me the kit (Off-Road Only) installed a one-way valve the wrong way around! I _think_ the side gasket blew, but there could be other damage I guess. Does anyone have experience with similar damage? Is a complete tear-down + rebuild necessary? I'm going to have them send me a replacement, unless it's something easy to fix.

Thanks,
js.

I've found Yorks fairly easy to work on, but I would get the supplier to provide a replacement if it won't cost you an excessive amount.

The York is pretty simple... You can get a gasket kit from Kilby Ent, but if there's something else wrong (like in the head) you'll need a replacement. Are you running a filter to catch the oil when it blows out?

There's a pressure relief (aka burst disc) right above the side cover (opposite the clutch). I took it out and it looks like some kind of tiny spring assembly. This may have released and let a "burst" or air & oil out. I had wiped down the compressor a bit, but found some oil still leaking from it. I cleaned it some more with brake cleaner, and will see if it's still leaking. I think leaking oil is definitely a bad sign...

Are you running a filter to catch the oil when it blows out?

I have a de-oiler on the output with a return to the compressor for the accumulated oil. The "one way valve" which caused all this problem is located at the input side of the de-oiler. After the de-oiler there's a manifold with a pressure relief and switch. Too bad that pressure relief wasn't located closer to the compressor... I'll have to re-examine the design and try to move that pressure relief valve closer to the source -- before the one way valve...

Thanks,
js.

When I was @ Kilby, we ran the check valve on the output of the coalescing filter, that way the system is always pressurized from the compressor to the check valve, enabling you to force the oil back into the compressor without it running. I'm not sure what you're describing opposite the clutch...... Every York I've seen just has a plate back there..... Maybe it's something they added?

Yup, there's a plate there, but right above the plate, there's brass plug that appears to be spring loaded.

I expect it did it's job, except the compressor still appears to be leaking oil. We'll see what it looks like tomorrow, but I've asked ORO to ship me a replacement anyway.

Thanks!
