You guys and your Jeeps...

Welcome to Nevadafornia
Rule! :victory:

I'm very impressed with the new JK, and I'm very grateful to the guy who pulled me out. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a member here.

The story:

On our way to exploring the Monitor and Toquima ranges east of Austin we drove Highway 50 east from Fallon. Up on the switch backs above Austin to the summit at 7500 feet, my stomach started really hurting and I needed to find a spot to pull off as soon as possible. We got to the summit and I saw several gravel piles maybe 50 yrds from the highway and immediately pulled off, hit the brakes, grabbed a handful of TP and raced behind the pile. Well after taking care of business I hopped back in the truck and managed to move maybe 5 feet in reverse before sinking the truck to the skids/axle in snow.

Whoops...
So close to the highway it was absurd!

Well we tried and tried and tried to dig it out. I needed better shovels, and more straps apparently.

We moved gravel and rocks behind the tires and I jacked the thing up and stuck rocks under the tires. No go.

Finally a Chevy 1500 from Arkansas with 35" KM2s pulled off, he was a nice guy and tried to help but he ended up slightly stuck himself and the 35s were just not getting enough traction to pull me out. I had to cut the end off my snatch strap so he could free himself. I thanked him for the effort and he headed on his way.

Back to the shovels for a while until an older gentleman driving a very nice 09 F350 Powerstroke pulled off to help. Well he was just too heavy and he ended up sinking in himself but not to the point where I was stuck. We spent about an hour digging him out and shoving sage brush and gravel under his tires until he eased right up out of it. Well he wished me luck and I thanked him for his help and he suggested I find someone with a winch to pull me from pavement as I was only about 30 yards off.

Coincidentally, as he says this, I see a 4 door JK Rubicon with an ARB bumper with a winch, and pulling a bright yellow off road tent trailer. I flagged him down and he said yeah no problem I'll get you free. I told him it was deep and to be careful or he could end up stuck, to which he replied I won't get stuck :coffeedrink: Then I noticed the sticker on his rear window, Fallon SAR. :wings: I hooked a shackle and strap to his bumper and he gave me a slight tug and out I popped, didn't even need his winch. I must say I was extremely impressed with him and his Jeep. He didn't even charge me. If you're reading this, THANK YOU!

You can see where I sank after slamming to a halt and where the heavy F350 made a mess of things.

From looking at your pics even if you had a winch I don't think it would of helped . Doesn't look like there was anything to hook up to . Well maybe if you had one of those Pull Pal anchor's .

You gotta be careful of strangers kindly offering to winch you out. A friend of mine got his YJ high centered on a tree laying over on the ground and was out there all alone scratching his head trying to figure out how to get himself off with no tools or anything when some guys in a big red neck truck came by and pulled him off.....then robbed him. They took his wallet and watch and phone and the book of CDs he had in the jeep and called it payment for their towing service. Thats why we never go out without at least a hi lift and tow straps and a shovel, winches and a chain saw and other odds and ends make life a lot easier, and a second vehicle is your best friend.

Wow the photos must be deceiving, I am really surprised that you and everyone else was that stuck. I have been axles plus deep in packed wet snow, and while difficult I was able to dig out and get moving every time.

No matter, it was a fun read. Glad you found that Jeep.

I guess I am the guy in question, you are welcome.

I cannot believe people would charge you to pull you out, all I ask in return is that if someone sees me stuck they come and pull me out!!!

It was pretty cool to see my mighty Little Rubi succeed where two mega trucks failed!!!

As for the pics, they are a little misleading. it was about 18 inches of fresh heavy wet snow on top of old icy snow on top of mud. the ruts in the pic were about 18 inches deep!

Yeah, I'm usually pretty leery of such things. My friend had his XD and I had my G17 in the truck. You're absolutely right though.

Hey thanks, yeah me too . We were pretty well sitting on the frame and axle though, here's maybe a better picture. The rear is still slightly deceiving in this picture.

They didn't charge him, they mugged him. He was all alone and I guess there were two guys that got out of the truck and the third stayed in, so it was either give them what ever they wanted or else get the **** beat out of him and they take what they want. There was one winter in my cherokee where a small car got stuck on a pile of snow left in the road by the plow that I helped tug off, and the lady tried to offer me money for my help but I wouldn't accept because I had fun getting her unstuck.

Absolutely, I'd do the same for anyone, or at least try.

You're Jeep was awesome up there, I was very impressed. It was effortless it seemed, or compared to the big trucks it was.

I wanted to ask you more about your tent trailer and such but didn't want to take up your time.

ExPo is a great place. :smiley_drive:

The big trucks just loosened it up for him, just like when you take the lid right off the jar after your wife had pried on it for 5 minutes.:Wow1::victory:

I'm not sure about his Tentrax, but they aren't really a "tent trailer", oh you can get them with a small tent, or modify for one (like mine) but they're for ONE/TWO people

The Tentrax trailer was designed years ago for light duty (jeep) excursions, they're fairly small and will follow even EXTREME jeeps, wherever they go

Kinda like a corvette--quick in, quick out and they're very light, mine fully loaded is 900 lbs, they not really Expedition trailers, they're like a PT boat was to a Destroyer

Mine's the Same color as his too
