ZJ late shift issue

The wife's ZJ with 5.2 and 46rh trans has a late 2nd to 3rd shift. Added Lucas treatment and that didnt help. This late shift has been present for about two years and hasnt gotten any worse, it has about 160k miles on it.

Driving normally it doesnt shift till late unless i slightly backoff the skinny pedal, but if i get on it a bit it shifts as normal.

Any ideas?

Mine has the opposite problem when its cold, if I get on it it wont shift unless I let off the skinny peddle. I bought the Lucas stuff to but I haven't bothered to put it in.

Not sure if you have the same arrangement as the 4.0 XJ's, but on those there is a cable attached to the throttle body. The pedal linkage attaches to the arm that opens the throttle. Also on this arm is a cable that runs to the tranny. It has an automatic adjuster on the throttle body end. It should be a grey button. You would hold in that button, pull the cable casing back as far as it'll go then let go of the button. Then you manually push the throttle to wide open- use the pedal or directly on the throttle body-- just make sure you get all the way open or it won't work right. The cable will adjust itself with a loud click.
It's worth a shot to see if this applies to your rig. I know of many Cherokees that solved bad shifting problems with this simple adjustment. Takes only a few minutes.

Good luck.
