Hilux question, Reffered to as a KUN25?

Im about to pull the trigger on a used 2007 Hilux 2.5 turbo diesel. Im looking at one and the guy is reffereing to it as a KUN25? Im not that familiar with the Hilux internal model numbers so I could use some help. Does anyone know what this is reffering to?

The add states Toyota Hilux KUN Double cab 2.5.

Any insight with this would be appreciated.

Holly roll cage batman... No it doesnt have that.

I live in Chile. Im guessing the name KUN25 is some internal Toyota name/number given to the 7th generation Hilux? But Im honestly not sure.

Its appears to be a regular Hilux, but Ive never heard of the designation KUN.

Toyota has used codes forever. I know they are used to describe the chassis, but maybe they describe the body configuration as well.

I wonder if you can purchase that roll cage there in Chile.

Id likely have to purchase it in the US and ship it down through port Everglades. We don't seem to have a Safety Devices dealer according to the website.

Needless to say I dont have any interest in that. Its going to be a work truck for me. Simple and reliable.

I think your right it may describe the body configuration and engine combo..

The Toyota tradition for VINs has been: Engine, Chassis, Body Codes, then the remaining serial.
For example: A typical 1971 Land Cruiser would be F (F155 motor) J (J-series chassis) 40LV (short-wheelbase utility, left-hand drive, hard top), or a 1985 would be F(2F motor) J(J-chassis) 60 (long wheelbase 4-door wagon) It's a pretty cool way to see how a truck was initially configured, especially among older Cruisers that may have left Arakawa Auto Body with a hard top and now it's open-topped, or originally had an externally-oiling F135 motor and now has a more-modern 2F.
I'm guessing that this truck has a 1KZ or 1KD engine, and a UN series frame (N was the original pickup/Hilux frame code prior to the Global/USDM Hilux/Taco split) and 25 would be the body style.

If you pop the hood and look at the VIN tag you'll see it right up top, and these codes will appear at the start of the VIN like: "JT4RN38..."

I sometimes worry that I'm the Toyota equivalent of Rain Man...

Alright Rainman, help me decifer all this. Here I have my Prado 120 and my Hilux VIN plates.

Tell me what you see...

The Prado has a 1GR-FE V6 engine, a J-Frame and is body-style 120, so it's a 120-series Prado as opposed to a 90-series, and it's got an A750F automatic transmission and a 4-liter displacement.
The Hilux has a 2KD turbodiesel engene, a UN series frame and I'm guessing "25" is 4-door cab, so a 2-door might be a "20". The transmission is an R151F 5-speed manual, and has the much-sought after 4.31 low-range first gear and a 2.5 liter displacement.

In both cases I'm extremely jealous: those cars and the diesel engine in particular are unobtanium here, since we can have 707HP V8s but small, efficient diesels are verboten.

Thanks for letting me look at your VIN tags!

Well alright then! Yeah first gear in the Hilux is good for like 30 feet... In low range it crawls. The 2.5 D4D has good power and drives very well. It was hard to find a clean used Hilux though. Most of them are beat to hell and back (but still drive surprisingly well). I looked at some 2010s with half the Kms and they were in such worse shape from mine use that when I found the 2007 I bought it fast as clean examples dont last for sale very long.

The Prado is such a nice truck it amazes me every time I drive it. Simple and reliable. Interior is not as fancy as a Lexus but not as spartin as my Hilux. All I did to the truck was replace the suspension with Old Man Emu and swap some decent tires on it. Removed the running boards and added some cheap mud flaps. My wife and I have been all over Chile in it. Its a great travel truck. Reliable, capable and comfortable. I tried finding a 3.0 turbo diesel model but they are only sold in Argentina if Im not mistaken. Chile never got the Diesel Prado. Although Ive seen some around imported I assume.

Thanks for the lesson on VIN decoding!

Here are some photos of the last trip to the South Of Chile, Puerto Varas. We drove some of the famous Carretera Austral as well.
