06 LR3 Problem with cruise control

Hello all. Lately I have been having an intermittent problem with the cruise control on my 2006 LR3, 80,000 miles. It will works fine sometimes then for no reason, the next time I try to use it, it will not work. Has anyone had this problem or anyone have an idea as to what might be causing this? Otherwise, I love the car and it has been super reliable. Thanks in advance for your help.

First off, I'm sorry to say I have no idea about the issue you've presented. However, I wanted to say that you took a sick pic. Also, are you running the KO2's?

I'd guess you have the same problem as me. I suspect it's the clock spring (not cheap)... Other possibilities but unlikely would be the buttons, but I doubt it. One of these days someone will come out with a reasonably priced one.

I notice your profile says UT, and your picture is UK plates??

I've only ever seen the switches cause the cruise control not to work on LR3's. Do you have any kind of diagnostic tool that will allow you to monitor live data from the switches?

Essayons!!
It was under the warranty when it was replaced. I believe it is in the steering wheel. Other than that I am not sure what it takes to replace.

I do not have a Diag Tool. Will the GAP tool do that? Thanks!

I've only ever used a Snap On Solus and IDS/SDD. You'll just have to look through the menus on your scanner or ask someone that has that tool.

I'm not surprised that people have had spiral cassettes do that, but I've personally never seen that.

What exactly are the clock springs and where are they located? DIY? Thanks!

The clock spring is also called a spiral cassette and rotary coupler. It is a device that connects the switches on your steering wheel and airbag to the wire harness of the vehicle. I'm sure google would have a better explanation. Basically an electrical connector that can rotate. If it fails the circuit between the cruise control switches and the ecu would be broken.

I wouldn't say it is a DIY for the novice anyway. To remove it, you need to disarm the air bags. That involves a process of putting the baby to bed, and a tool to release the cap. I am not saying it cannot be done, just something I'm not willing to do. I also had my clock spring replaced under warranty, but it didn't take long for it to fail.

The reason I suspect it is less likely to be the buttons is because the radio buttons take a beating and have never missed a beat.

Be nice for all the buttons to work though.

There is nothing special for removing the airbags. If you want to be extra safe, disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. The hard part for a DIYer would be removing the air bag which requires a special tool.

I've also never seen radio switches on the steering wheel fail, just cruise control switches. I've probably replaced a dozen or so of them.

Thanks all. It seems unlikely to be the switches because One drive it works, the next time it doesn't. When it stops working i can usually turn the key off, re-start it and it will work most of the time.

Would be as someone mentioned either the buttons themselves or possibly a bad wheel speed sensor. Sometimes people have had theirs rubbed since it snakes down with the brake wear sensor in that wiring harness. Yeah GAP would be a good help here. Possibly go to dealer and ask them to reflash the ECU for that system. That or have them diagnose.
