winches

Another thing to consider is that winch ratings are often based on first wrap pull, and as you add wraps to the drum, the diameter increases, decreasing the winch's mechanical advantage, and thus decreasing the pull capacity. You might start out with a 10k winch, and then it's only good for 6 or 7 thousand by the time the drum is loaded up.

Normally that shouldn't be an issue because just breaking yourself free is what takes the most force.

A using a snatch block for a double line pull will also double your pull capacity, but halve the speed and distance you can go... all things to consider.

Which is all I need since I wont load to full capacity, well hope not to anyway lol.
When you use a pulley you do help gain more pulling power but it will take twice the cable which will reduce the power and you will have less options for anchor points if you run short on cable.

I knew that, which for the length being short, medium and long ( since I don't know the actual number sizes) I will look towards the med to long range. but ill have a few extra inched since I will be using a winch tray and wont keep the winch on the truck.

When you say winch tray do you mean a removable craddle?

Yes, sorry that is one of those things that has more than 1 name and I never remember which is the proper name.

Those are mounted with a hitch receiver designed for maybe 5k and pulling straight. You will also loose approach or departure angle when mounted. They do have advantages and they have disadvantages.

Yeah I read that somewhere but would that really matter since my truck is lifted and on 33's? When I read up on the front mounted hitches had the approach and depart angles a lot of them were based on stock height trucks, since mine is lifted ( and might get a inch or 2 taller) I didn't think that would be effected much anymore, plus I was thinking of only plugging the cradle in when I needed to winch and just keep the cradle in the bed when not needed or would that be a bad idea?

Be aware, moving the winch while in the driveway on level ground is one thing. Moving a 50-100lb winch/cradle when your vehicle is hanging over the edge of a road on a slippery surface and the receiver is over your head.......is another.

I won't build another vehicle with a multi-mount winch system.

Exactly. Dragging around a 70lb plus winch in an environment where you would be stuck may not be that easy, it could even be dangerous. Depending on how you are stuck you may not even be able to mount it.

Good point, I will just mount it at the mouth of the trail first then, but will it still effect my trucks approach and depart angles with it being lifted? (its basically a 3in suspension lift)

Yes. It will stick way out. I could also change how your suspension performs. The further out the more you will notice the extra weight.
