Fuso FG 6x6 Conversion?

Any companies out there do a 6x6 conversion for the Fuso FG4x4?

Is your goal to add carrying capacity beyond what is offered with super single rear wheels, or to reduce the load carried by each wheel? Does the third axle have to be driven?

reduce load over each wheel as it will mainly be used in the desert. Driven axle if possible. Right now I'm looking at a FMTV but curious whats out there that's new.

Nothing Mitsu available stateside, cheapest thing will be used 5 ton garbage truck axles. They have locking diffs and a disconnect between axles so you can run 2WD, 4WD and 6WD. Go to your local truck salvage yard they should be easy to come by.
Then there's 2.5 ton Rockwells and these will be the cheapest option but open diffs and they don't last nearly as long between rebuilds.

Three axles over 6,000 lb gvw requires a class B CDL in CA

It's a strange CA law, that a lot of the cops don't know but the CHP commercial officers know it.

Seems like serious overkill. Also if on a walkingbeam, thats going to ride seriously rough.

Yes it is, not to mention the different lug pattern and air brakes. There is an air ride conversion for the walking beam.

If the truck is actually a motorhome license, I dont think it matters anyway.

Most of the three axle motor homes use an unpowered lift axle to skirt the issue

Fuso FG6x6 vs. FMTV?

I suspect the gross cost difference would favor the FMTV, by a long shot.

1. Purchase FG4x4
2. Conversion Materials
3. Conversion Labor
4. Conversion Timeframe
5. Don't forget a complete set [7] of new tires

Then again, a 1994 LMTV M1078 by Stewart Stevenson [1500 miles] is asking for $18K on CL/CA Inland Empire.

Yeah, it's only 4x4 but the tires can be aired down for most any desert travel.

FMTV's or LMTV's were built for this task in mind... they may have their shortcomings, but the relatively low entry cost likely outweighs the benefits of the build you have in mind.
