TJ Magnum Swap Question

All,

I've spent the last month or so swapping the 5.9L from my ZJ into a 2001 Wrangler. I've gotten all the way to the point of turning the key...and you can guess what happens...

I have Spark
I have Fuel Pressure
I have voltage at the injector

I do not get an injector pulse. It does not attempt to fire at all (no backfiring, rough running, etc)

Can anyone give me some diagnostic steps to take?
Am I correct in stating that the cam sensor drives the pulse?
Does the PCM check for oil pressure before starting?

Details below on my exact setup:

1998 Jeep 5.9L Motor
Wiring Harness made by me, made by altering the 2001 Wrangler harness (yea, I'm 90% sure it's all right)
2001/02 Durango PCM (Flashed/altered by B&G/A2Speed for my specific application)

I fought with a Durango PCM for a while. They swore up and down that the vehicle it came from did not have a factory security system in and that wasn't the problem. On the 3rd one, they changed it out into one of their own vehicles to test, they then turned the security off and sent it to me. Worked fine after that. You may have them recheck it, seemingly easy to miss.

Ok, I will contact them to make sure that they disabled it. Is there a way to check and see if it is being triggered, even if they say the disabled it? I'm trying to remember, but I'm almost 100% sure the key was in the ignition at the Junkyard, and it was not the gray SKIM key...but it was a junkyard, so that might not have even been the key.

Thanks,
Mitch

To your point though, I was under the impression SKIM you allow you to start the vehicle, and then would immediately kill it. Do you know if this is the case, or will it not allow the vehicle to start at all?

When I was fighting with mine it was a straight no start. The place doing mine kept telling me that they disabled it, but it wasn't till they actually put it in a vehicle and tested that it worked when it got to me.

Interesting. I've emailed them to ask if they can provide me any information, and asking directly if they messed with security stuff at all. In their defense, I don't think I asked them to remove it, if it had it formally, just mentioned it.

So, I worked on it some, got fuel going.....BUT NO SPARK NOW! I pulled the dist and checked the timing there, everything looks on, put a spark plug on the coil wire, no spark...CPS seems to be testing good, but I forgot to switch the multimeter to AC current so I can't be positive. ASD relay is good, but I didn't double check that it's working properly today.

So I'm trying to figure out why I'm not getting spark. CPS is working, Cam sensor seems to be working. I double checked my timing. All seems well there, and I'm getting 5V to the coil plug on the wiring harness side. I doubled checked the coil with a known good one I had, just as a last resort, and nothing still. Anyone have any suggestions?

Also, If I throw a plug in the coil wire and crank, the plug does not spark. IF I hook a multimeter up to it, I get voltage out of the coil plug. Could this indicate a bad ground? (wire grounding out through multimeter?)

Do you have any way to read the trouble codes stored?

Maybe something will show up there..?

Yea, I've read them, none of them would related to a no-start (02 sensor not pliugged in, coolant temp sensor out of threshold are the only 2)

Anyone know the procedure to test the ASD system?

Thanks for all your help. We traced everything back and it seemed fine. We weren't getting any oil pressure, even after cranking for a few seconds. Dumped gas in the intake just to check, and it ran rough.

Distributor was 180* off, but I was aware that this was a very real possibility, so we fixed that first thing.

Then we tried to solve for the oil pressure sensor. WE probed the harness side, and realized we weren't getting any power. Followed it back to the PCM, and at some point I had put the PCM side of the connector on upside down. Not sure how I could make such a dumb mistake, even if it is a easy thing to have done.

After flipping the plug, It fired right up and ran great.Going to finish soldering a couple wires I have left, and get the vacuum lines routed and I'll be in business! Thanks again!

Huh, it's good to know that without oil pressure the PCM won't let it run.

I wonder if it would actually shut it down while running if you unplug the oil pressure sensor?

Well, I'd have to check to give you a full list, but the whole plug was in upside down. So no telling what else was in the wrong pin

Jeep is running good. I am working on the exhaust and fan wiring right now. Pics/Video to come with a complete build on it...
