Long range fuel tank

STAGE 2

Several people, myself included, have been searching for a long range replacement tank for 05+ tacomas. Well after wasting some time on the internet I found this company, and they have several pics of the tank itself as well as it installed on the truck. These are made for a hilux, but maybe they can be made to work with a taco

What do you guys think? Does this look like it it would work?

Looks interesting, I would really like a bigger tank.

But is this the same company that makes Long Ranger fuel tanks, or is it a copy?

I think its the same. They are apparently distributed by ARB if that helps.

The Taco and Hilux do not share a common frame, so I don't know that they are all that interchangeable. Maybe something for a Prado or 4Runner? The Taco, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and GX470 are all based on the 120 Prado frame.

They have one for a prado, but looking at the pics it won't work as the prado tank is mounted behind the rear axle and not between the axles on the drives side like the taco.

What are the differences between the taco frame and hilux frame? Just looking at the pics on the site, the placement of things looks to be almost identical with respect to the tank, exhaust, driveshaft and such.

I don't know the specific differences. The layout of stuff under a truck is not exactly pushing the edge of design, but where the frame cross members are located could easily be nowhere close. That's something I would check before I spent $1000 on a fuel tank. The new Hilux is based on Toyota's new International Multipurpose Vehicle (IMV) platform. The Taco is wider and longer than the Hilux, so I dunno how that changes the layout and dimensions of stuff underneath. It could probably be made to work, but the amount of rework to fit it could be pretty extensive.

It'll be great to get a 15-20 gal aux tank to extend driving range to 500-600miles.

But since, like me, you have the distinction of living in california, most aux tanks won't pass smog. Thats the perk of just getting a larger main tank.

true, or if the aux tank can be fill through the same gas tube of the main tank then when smog they usually won't notice.

I didn't know that about CA. Oh great, I live in CA. First they make it hard to get a diesel, on top of that, now I'm gonna have trouble trying to get an aux tank? Sigh.

This is from the Taco vs Hilux thread.

also the frame on the hilux is fully boxed and the new tacoma is 1/3 box 1/3 c-channel 1/3 open

Yeah, but how the frame is formed isn't really an issue. Its the frame dimensions which are going to be the potential issue.

The good is that the tank and filler neck are on the same side and in the same location on the taco as they are the hilux.

Bump.

Anyone has any new info on bigger or aux tank on 05+ Tacoma?
After our 1700miles trip looking for gas station every 250miles gets a little tiring.
With strong head wind I average 14.5mpg on freeway.

Something's wrong with your truck if you are getting only 250 to the tank on the freeway.

not necessarily. thats about all mine gets, 300 if im easy on it.

an idea i had for an aux tank was to install a second stock tank on the passenger side. if the exhaust were to be condensed down as short as possible, which is there is room for, there is plenty of room to take a stock 18.5 gallon tank and hang directly opposite the main tank. the only thing with the exhaust is that the drum muffler has to go. i have a flowmaster muffler on mine, which is about a 1/4 the size of stock.

with the second tank hanging on the passenger side, and the fill neck still facing to driver side, it looks like theres room run the filler neck tubing up and over the driveshaft and main tank and tie it into the stock filler neck using the land cruiser switchable neck. i forget exactly what its called but it has a pull valve for switching which tank youre filling.

im not entirely sure if thats the case with the 05+ models, ive only taken measurements on mine which is an 04. maybe one of these days ill have the money to try it out.
