Fuso fk 4x4 converstion????

Can Anyone give me a thought on the idea of Unimog Axles?

I realize that the portal axles will raise the COG, but I also understand that it can put extra strain on the vehicle itself, but I do not understand that concept at all. I guess it is the same concern with converting a fuso to a SRW configuration.

Of course something like that would not fit on one of the really large fusos unless you are willing to be extreamely tall, but on a smaller one I would think it would be a good stout axle.

Thanks for the education!

Mog axles on a Fuso would entail quite a bit of work. The smaller model mogs like a 404 have an axle that is roughly the size to fit an FG, while the larger mogs, like U1300 - U2350s are pretty big and heavy. The few problems they have, like portal box deflection on a 404 axle, can be easily fixed. A 404 steering axle weighs over 500 pounds and is the lightest weight axle that I would consider using depending on power and tire size and desired usage. The axles are only rated (conservatively) at around 5000 pounds each.

A stock Mog axle is located using a torque tube, which your Fuso does not have and you cant exactly create one easily, so you will need to do a pinion conversion on the mog axle, which results in a very long pinion snout. Drum brakes are standard on many mog axles, so a disc brake conversion is necessary. They also use a strange wheel stud pattern in some cases, so that should be considered as well.

There are quite a few companies who specialise in Mog axles for off road buggies and such, one is Exaxt Axle in Canada: http://www.exaxt.ca/index.asp talk to Rob, he is a good guy. There are quite a few guys on pirate that know mog axles very well, unimogken and weps come to mind. Plenty of reading on there about making mog axles fit into damn near anything, including upgrades, problems, models, etc.

The ground clearance would be great for an off highway truck, just not going to be easy or cheap to obtain as your vehicle height, CoG, suspension and everything else underneath will be affected in some way.

I have been considering this for some time now, but came to the conclusion that it would simply be unrealisticly high. especially when you consider some suspension lift for better travel, and that mog axles would be a complete waste of time if running anything smaller than 40" tires.
All in all, say 2-3" of suspension lift, the 4" from the portal hubs and 40" tires you are looking at a vehicle that is around 12-13" taller than standard!

Oh and if you did, Im fairly sure that 416 fast axles would be best- a 416 is almost identical in dimension and weight to a fg.

Just my 2c worth...

why not just get the Fg with all the unimog gear factory fitted?

ahahaha yeah chocko i forgot about that one!
i dunno but, it doesnt seem to have that same 'baby-eating' stance that the other mogs do. id say it appears to be based on the U300-500 series (the implement carriers, as mercedes puts it)...

does anyone know anything about this rig??

That's not a unimog, it's a mercedes truck.

hmm, sure about that mate?
its got portal axles, you can see that in the pic, and im pretty sure you can make out unimog on the grill, up and left of the merc star...

looks like about the size of an Atego and if you blow the picture up, you can clearly make out Unimog to the right of the star.

Correct, that IS the Unimog U20,

It is a very nice truck, but it was NOT intended to be an offroad 4x4 type vehicle. I think it would do very well off road, but it is not a U5000. It has a LOT of cool things, there are just a few things on there that hang a bit low so that they can carry more impliments.

The big thing is that I have no idea what the price is on them. No one here can get even a price because we could not import them anyhow, so they won't bother telling us the prices.

There is a big thread on it over at the benxworld.org site (in the unimog forums.)

So, yeah, a very nice vehicle.

apologies, stirred up a hornets nest.
Yeah they are an Implement carrier, and i'd presume that they are geared to Max 80klm/hr. But they look cool!!!!!!
I'd be prepared to sell my soul for one!!!

Hello Guys,

This is a Unimog: View Here

This one is the small Unimog, 7,5-9,3t
the Target Market seems to be City's and Town's. Basicly a smaller Vehicle, with less Bells and whistles and a cheaper price.

Wide 2060 mm
Long 4970 mm

Wheelbase 2700 mm

Looks neat, but still perfer a MB 4x4 Truck. If I would get a new one it would be a Mecedes Zetros View Here

Hope this helped

Mike

Yeah thats kinda what i was getting at when i said based on a U300 vehicle, as opposed to an older 1300 or new U3000, etc.

It's tiny! A 100 inch wheel base. I heard they made a small one but I didn't expect it to look like that.
