What a cool idea for a winter trip. You must have freaked out when your 5DMII died on you. I'd say you still captured some amazing images of the lights.

Thanks for sharing them with us.

Thanks, you have no idea! Even worse I was really mad at myself. Because of the tight connections, I had to pack my carry on with enough for the weekend at the wilderness camp (that included my tripod) if my checked bag didn't make it. The bush plane was a first thing flight, so I didn't pack a second body. I left a 30d and 1dMIV at home.... It really ticked me off buying a camera I will not use.... but was money well spent every night : )

Thanks so much for sharing - looks like the lights were out in full force for you!

The aurora fills me with a sense of wonder unlike anything else.

Glad you were able to get some pics. I know that feeling of arriving with a broken camera, my first night in the Kenya bush mine broke too. Still got a few shots, but nothing like yours - good job.

Jay, those are some great shots! Now I know for sure the Northern Lights are on my bucket list.

As a new owner of a 5DMII, it is a little disconcerting to hear that yours failed. How many images had you taken with it? Did it just quit without warning, or had the shutter been acting up?

Very cool!

Great pictures. Thank you so much for sharing. I would love to travel to the northern reaches someday... and now I have some pictures to show to The_Mrs. to help her get past that "Its really cold" problem. Good for your mother too, go do it. She gets a gold star! :)

It is a work camera and used daily. I have a lot of frames on it. A lot of video shot. I would buy one without concern if I wanted/needed full frame. (which I love)

There had been no warning... like I read on the internet, the error 20 went away 4 days into the trip, nothing I did... to fix or break it. So I did get to use the 5d once I was back in Yellowknife, just makes me not trust the camera now.
Don't worry about yours, shutters go.... I found forum traffic of it happening on a lot of different cameras, not just the 5d....

great report and pics!

We were lucky enough to see the northern lights in August of last year, in our t-shirt and shorts over Lake Superior..

I'm sure our sighting was no where near as intense as the lights you saw, but even that was amazing.

I remember...

great report and pics!

That chance was the motivation behind this trip. My family spent hours on a dark shore on Lake Ontario that evening! But saw nothing....
